About this listen

From marriage, infidelity, and the mayhem of motherhood to scandal, tragedy, and illness - three women seek peace and comfort in Nantucket as they cope with life's challenges.

Three women - burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues - tumble onto the Nantucket airport tarmac one hot June day. Vicki is trying to sort through the news that she has a serious illness. Her sister, Brenda, has just left her job after being caught in an affair with a student. And their friend Melanie, after seven failed in vitro attempts, is pregnant at last - but only after learning that her husband is having an affair. They have come to escape, enjoy the sun, and relax in Nantucket's calming air. But into the house, into their world, steps 22-year-old Josh Flynn.

Barefoot weaves these four lives together in a story with enthralling sweep and scope - a novel that is as fun and memorable and bittersweet as that one perfect day of summer.

This started out slow but then you get invested in to the four main characters stories. As always it makes you want to live on Nantucket and go to the beach.

It was a good story and I looked forward to listening to more when I had to put it down. But I really struggled with how self-absorbed the women in this book were. They could do nothing but think about themselves. I kept waiting for them to come around but they never did.

I liked the story but I kept if waiting….

I told myself that if Melanie got back with her husband I would have to stop reading Elin Hilderbrand books. What a set-back for women's characters!

Spoiler Alert

I enjoyed every bit of this book, including the narration. 3 women each going through a major life changing ordeal. Each ordeal as different as the colors black and white but truly not different at all...

a wonderful story of resilience and determination

I loved the story, the plot, and how the story sucked me in. My only complaint is I absolutely hate the F word.

I love the way the characters come together each from their own story. Elin Hilderbrand can make something so simple 3 women, their collective back stories meld them together and bring a beautiful story of hope to her pages.
PS I really need to go to Nantucket. I think I could live there.

It makes you really hope!!

Predictable story in some ways, dragged on a lot. Very descriptive writing my Hilderbrand. Got tired of the repetition in many chapters.

A little draggy…
