About this listen

At the dawn of the French Revolution, the men, women, and children of Paris have one hope to escape the guillotine: the masked and mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel. But who is this daring swordsman and quick-thinking master of disguise? London’s privileged, self-obsessed Sir Percy Blakeney.

When his estranged wife, Marguerite, falls prey to French envoy Chauvelin’s blackmail, she unwittingly exposes the Pimpernel and imperils the covert league he commands.

Set amid the Reign of Terror, Baroness Orczy’s thrilling romantic adventure of loyalty and revenge introduced a new brand of hero - a righteous champion with a secret identity - who would influence every masked vigilante to follow.

Revised edition: Previously published as The Scarlet Pimpernel, this edition of The Scarlet Pimpernel (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Read & listen

Reading and listening simultaneously to The Scarlet Pimpernel enhanced my enjoyment of this long loved story. I read from a Signet Classic with eight pages of 1982 scenes showcasing Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour and Ian McKellen actors in the CBS Television production of this romantic adventure film.

Fantastically Read!!

I have read the book before and worried that listening to the audio version might alter my view of the characters, but the opposite is true! His reading is so well performed and perfectly paced, adored every chapter.

One of my favorites… very well narrated

This novel has been a favorite of mine for many decades, having re-read it multiple times. Michael Page does a wonderful job with the performance, and remains consistent throughout when it comes to the accents, dialects and voices he uses for each character. Wonderful job!

Well written

This was required reading for me in high school and while I remember having enjoyed it greatly, I never picked it up again until now. It was wonderful. Highly recommend. I might make this one of my yearly reads. The reader did a great job voicing the characters.

Nineteenth Century Hillside Ripper

About the French Revolution in its early phase. Escape from the revolutionary rabble. (Bernie Sanders families need not read.).

Read it long ago in my youth. Loved it. Listened to it this week in periods of insomnia. Less enchanted, but still listened to the end with great pleasure.

Baroness Orkzy writes from the woman's POV, to great effect on a current audience, both positive and negative. A little skewed by 19th C ideas about womanhood, but a great read for young girls and boys, esp if paired with Scaramouche, about the same period in history.
