About this listen

The Secret Garden is a story about Mary Lennox, a 10-year-old child who never received love or affection from either of her self-centered parents, and was raised by the family's servants. She grows to be spoiled, selfish, and rude and after a cholera epidemic in India, everyone in her household is found dead except Mary. She is then transplanted to live with her uncle, whom she has never met before, at his manor in Yorkshire England. Here Mary meets her cousin Colin for the first time: a bed ridden boy who is just as spoiled as she is.

From there, Mary discovers the existence of a "secret garden" which has been locked away for over 10 years after the death of her Aunt. As Mary and Colin begin to spend more and more time in the garden, their spoiled nature begins to change and they are transformed for the better in more ways than one by the unknown magical powers of the garden.

Favorite childhood story

Was my favorite childhood story. And still remains one of my favorite. Loved the narration and excellent job on the Yorkshire Accents. Felt like I was right there with them in the garden. Now could share with my kids on our long summer car rides.

Phenomenal!

Having read this wondrous book as a young girl, I was ever so delighted to discover it on audible. The performance was great and the story was rich emotion. This book, read by Harriet Stevens, is a must have for literature lovers.

I watched the movie as a kid and loved it so much, when I saw the audio book I just had to read it. The book is great and beautifully narrated.

classic is a classic

The book was pretty good.

I think what really bothered me is that they kept referring to "Magic" as being the source of his healing and what made the world turn around and what made things grow and all this nonsense. The story is kind of long it doesn't have much of a story line but lots of character development.

Overall it was a good book but I probably wouldn't listen to it again.
