About this listen

The Secret Garden - When a young British girl, born and reared in India, loses her neglectful parents in an earthquake, she is returned to England to live at her uncle's castle. Due to the loss of his wife ten years before, her uncle is very distant and, once again, the girl finds herself ignored. As she grows accustomed to the house and its inhabitants, she begins exploring the estate and discovers a garden, the doors of which have been locked. Aided by one of the servants' boys, she begins restoring the garden and soon discovers some other secrets of the manor....

Great book, great narrator

This is the entire book, not an abridged version. The narrator has a pleasant voice, and used different voices for different characters.

Pure Enchantment

Just when I thought that Amazon Classic audiobooks couldn’t get any better than the last one I listened to, I listened to “The Secret Garden.” A childhood favorite that I always loved. Now at 65 years old I find I am completely captivated by this wonderful production. The narration was superb, perfect in fact. And of course, the story is timeless. Well done, Amazon. I hope you continue to add to narrated Amazon Classics library.

How has it taken me this long to read this book?

I specifically chose this audio book because I loved Susan Duerden’s performance in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (5 stars!!). Anyway, wow, is she good at character performances. Another reviewer gave this audio book one star based on Susan’s flat narration, and that reviewer gave up on the book. The reviewer should have stuck with the story, because as events become gradually more and more exciting for our main characters, Susan’s narration becomes more engaging. It was an intentional performance choice by Susan and the director for her to read the novel in a manner that really accentuated Mary’s listless and unpleasant personality, but as Mary’s world began to change (and thus as Mary began to grow), the narration becomes more lively as well.

Wonderful story, wonderful performance.
