Publisher's summary

An American businessman undertakes the restoration of his ancient ancestral home in England. After moving in, he's haunted by strange phenomena, apparently coming from the very walls of the legend-haunted mansion. A team of experts joins him to dig into the centuried structure's shadowed past, and its shadowy cellars. Can the investigators solve the lingering mystery of the grim and rumor-shrouded priory, or are they merely ushering in the most horrific chapter of the house's monstrous history?

The premium radio drama!

The HPLHS does an absolutely amazing job with this adaptation! The acting is great, the music is awesome, the videos are as chilly as a druidic temple!

Gothic Haunted House meets HPL!

This has long been a favorite story of mine and I love the treatment DART gives it hear. While staying completely true to the original story, the HPLHS elevates it even further with their adaptation. One of the weaknesses for me in Lovecraft's work is his characters feel almost nonexistent at time, its all about the events (which are horrifying and enthralling), but DART give the characters life which makes what happens to them so much more palpable. I love how each episode is something different. A straight-up horror story one episode, the next feels like playing a game of Eldritch Horror. One episode is melodramatic Indiana Jones, the next is like this episode Gothic horror, haunted house. DART is the best radio theater out there!

Nicely done

I think the work of the HPLHS is so top quality and important that everybody should buy their products to reward and encourage their work.

Superb Adaptation, Frightening

This was another excellent edition of the wonderful Dark Adventure Radio Theater. The Rats in the Walls was brilliantly adapted with some additional scenes that enhanced the story. A superb production with an equally superb cast. The voice talent is simply amazing. Accents are perfect. This story is chilling. Be sure to try other entries in this excellent series.

Freaky!!

Now, I didn't see that ending coming! The production was amazing and just the right length.

So, I'm heading off to find my next listen by the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society!

Great adaptation!

This was one of my favorite Lovecraft tales. Great adaptation here, retaining the atmosphere while cleaning up the racist parts. De La Poer's deterioration is well conveyed. Lots of speaking roles to fill out the story beyond what the original text has. Not quite as good as The Case of Charles Dexter Ward but definitely worth checking out.

Took an amazing story and made it better

HPLHS has such respect and reverence for HPL's work that they know who to take a short story and add to it in such a way it enhances vs erodes. This another master class in radio drama. A+++

More description then twist..

I like H.P, but the story kills me. The finally should be over the top, makes you think about it for days, is he the genius of horror. The obsolescent boring conversation for 5 chapters really sucks.

Good, But Not Great

This adaptation is not the best example of what the HPLHS can produce, but it’s enjoyable enough for a fan.

The performances by the various actors range from mediocre to excellent, leaving it feeling stilted at times. The adaptation itself isn’t very engrossing, but I’m sure it isn’t an easy task to accomplish within certain constraints like length and budget.

Their adaptation of The Shadow Out of Time remains the benchmark. That one is excellent.
