Publisher's summary

Parenting in today's world can feel like an uphill battle. How do we guide our children through the social and spiritual minefields of our culture? How do we make sure that they are ready when they leave the nest? And how do we trust God to watch over them as they do?

In this classic book, beloved author Elisabeth Elliot reveals cherished memories and valuable insights she gathered from her experiences growing up in a Christian home. Through the stories of her parents, grandparents, and siblings, Elliot extols the importance of obedience, prayer, trust, courtesy, and forgiveness, among many other lessons she learned as a child.

The Shaping of a Christian Family is an inspiring book for new and experienced parents, grandparents, and all who have come to trust Elliot's compassionate wisdom.

This book is read by Elisabeth Elliot’s granddaughter and namesake, Elisabeth Shepard Martin.

Absolutely Wonderful

I thoroughly savored every chapter in this dear book, and so appreciated that the narrator, Elisabeth Elliot’s granddaughter, read with such care and understanding of the subject and its author. About to listen through again. The depictions of home life starting with E.E.’s mother’s and father’s upbringing in Victorian times were priceless. And the example of godliness modeled from one generation to the next provides something of a roadmap, if one be desired, for the reader or listener. I’m 57. Wish I had read it long ago!

Just so wonderful!

It takes you back to another time, another way of living that is barely visible today. So many tearful stories but never without hope. There is no hard and fast, practical rules but the listener gains just the same. Some take aways I have started with my young family:
1. Singing hymns at night
2. Praying for my children’s spouses early
3. Send them outside to play and explore (let them be bored!)
4. Do the next right thing
5. Be consistent in discipline but loving
6. Find ways to laugh together and play together
7. Realize my kids are not mine, but God’s first

You will feel a part of the little family at the end and will desire to copy some of their wise and simple approaches to raising a Christian family. A fantastic book that I will think about for years!
