About this listen

Before he was anointed to carry on the legacy of Robert Ludlum's Janson Command series, and before he collaborated with Clive Cussler on the fan favorite Isaac Bell series, Justin Scott created this suspenseful adventure tale, a novel of love and revenge set on the high seas. Written in 1978, this is considered by many to be one of the best maritime thrillers of all time. As an expert in the world of ships and sailing, Justin Scott creates an authentic maritime world, making The Shipkiller all the more thrilling because it could be a true story. Audible favorite Marc Vietor brings this suspenseful adventure tale to vivid life with his exciting and well-paced narration.

Critic reviews

“A stunner. Absolutely riveting. A marvelously taut, brilliantly told story of revenge, and the sea, and the dark forces than can shape the human condition.” (Robert Ludlum)

For this book I'll write a review

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, this is a great book that I've read several times. I was estatic to see it as an Audible selection and for this book, and this book only, I'll take the time to write a review.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Great sailing and adventure story. For those who sail, the description of sailing was spot on. If you don't sail, it won't take away from the adventure and intrigue of the story.

Have you listened to any of Marc Vietor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not heard him before. He did a great job with this narrative.

Absolutely awesome book!

I purchased this when I first joined Audible 10 years ago but, for some reason, didn't get to it until now. Started it yesterday and finished it today. Couldn't stop listening. A must read!

Did pass the time but I have listened to better books.

Maybe

Have you listened to any of Marc Vietor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Ship killer is a good title.

Any additional comments?

Needs more meat in the story. More twists and turns. Very predictable.

Not what I expected!

Any additional comments?

The story never let me down. I enjoyed every minute of it and am looking for more by this author of the same genre. I have only a minimal experience in sailing but enjoyed the details of the boat and the sea. Highly recommended!

Damn good book

I enjoyed it thoroughly. Nice bit of sailing and maritime content. An unpredictable plot, maybe with a few questionable turns. A little racy romance and a dash of suspension of disbelief.

Nautical Delight

The story was engaging, and the author did a very good job with the technical aspects of ocean sailing and seamanship. If you enjoy tales of adventure on the high seas, I think this book will appeal to you.

Interesting premise that falls apart

The villain in this book is the world's largest oil tanker. If you are interested in sailing stories or are a sailor you may like this. As a thriller it's just okay. It's also sort of dated based on the improvements in navigation. If you like thrillers there are many better ones. Although the book kept me interested, the ending was quite bizarre. I thought I had missed something because it takes a big jump in the plot line. It's almost as though the author got tired of writing the book. So in summary, if you do not like ocean sailing, then I doubt this would keep your attention.

The Thiller of the YEAR!

This book is fantastic. It has all the elements that you want from your favorite authors all rolled into an incredibly suspenseful, thrilling story.

And if you have any plans on boarding anything larger than a dingy, do not read this story the night before departure. Do you remember "Airport" (1970) and impact it had on everyone who had to take a flight soon after watching it. Well, this story is going to effect folks who "take to the water" in the same way forever too.

There is also wonderful commentary about the behemoth ships that wonder the world to quench our never ending craving for oil. It is as hard to comprehend their size as it is to grasp the size of the Universe. And the threat that they pose to the entire planet is just a hull plate away.

Gosh, just get the book, take your Dramamine, and enjoy this thrilling journey.
