About this listen

A gathering of seven bestselling crime writers at a Scottish Highlands book festival turns deadly in a wickedly dark thriller that pays homage to Agatha Christie's classic murder mysteries, from the bestselling author of The Bonnie Dead.

When legendary crime novelist William MacRae is found dead in suspicious circumstances at his Glasgow home, Police Scotland's premier investigator DCI John Lomond is put on the case.

After discovering a list of seven bestselling authors–all old friends of MacRae's–Lomond and his team head north to the Ullapool Book Festival, where the seven are gathering to remember their fallen friend.

But a vicious storm is closing in. And not everyone, it seems, has fond memories of MacRae. Or each other.

Cut off from the outside world at a remote country home, it doesn't take long for the whisky to flow, old resentments to reignite…and another dead body to appear.

Over the course of one weekend, Lomond must sift through a web of red herrings, secrets, and lies.

One of them is a killer. But can Lomond unmask them before it's too late?

I very much enjoyed this one! Loved the Agatha Christie style set up and the allusions (whether real or imagined by me) to RL authors, such fun! The plot was interesting and complicated enough to keep me thinking, without being so convoluted as to become confusing. Lomond’s team are growing on me and I am looking forward to meeting them again in book 3.

Angus King’s narration is, as always, perfect.

Oooh yes!

I’ve now read/listened to all 4 books in this series, can’t wait for more! And cudos to the narrator!

Love the books, love the narrator! Want more!

If Angus King is reading I’m listening! Mr.Raymond can really weave a good story. Action sex murder and mystery.

This story was set up in a good old fashioned mystery.,.the characters are good & the narration is amazing but sometimes I think of JD Kirks characters lol

I loved it!!

I really enjoyed this story. And the writing, especially the fun banter between Lomond and his team. I thought it was going to be a typical ‘picking off one after the other in a big house in a storm where everyone is stranded’. But it was so much more interesting, the the last couple chapters as things resolved, I had tears in my eyes. These characters really got to me. The only less than perfect thing for me was Angus King’s narration. These books are better narrated than one by JD Kirk which I listened to that Angus King narrated. His range of distinctive voices has grown since that one for sure! I love a Scottish accent, but sometimes King sounds a bit marbles in mouth to me. However, I found that if I run the narration a speed a bit faster than normal, a lot of problems in that realm are resolved for me. Looking forward to #3!

A story that has nice twists and moving end.

The mystery and the characters keep your interest. It's a great series! The narrator does a great job.

Engaging

I like knowing that I will hear a convoluted tale of tragedy, some really fine comic moments, more concernt and hope for Tom, and one of the finest narrators out there.

Angus King is brilliant
