Publisher's summary

Continuously available in print since 1968, this novel has become embedded in progressive anti-racist culture with wide circulation of the book and hotly debated film. A literary classic, The Spook Who Sat by the Door is a strong comment on entrenched racial inequities in the United States in the late 1960s. With its focus on the “militancy” that characterized the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this is the story of one man’s reaction to ruling-class hypocrisy in ways that make the novel autobiographical and personal. As a tale of a reaction to the forces of oppression, this book is universal.

Dan Freeman, the “spook who sat by the door,” is enlisted in the CIA’s elitist espionage program. Upon mastering agency tactics, however, he drops out to train young Black Chicagoans to combat racism as “Freedom Fighters” in this explosive novel.

Thought-provoking

Loved it. Entertaining read all the way through. Very familiar with what is going on today. What would American look like if gangs didn't systematically destroy the young black revolutionary? That's why the government moves quick to quell any uprising. Otherwise, it would be a full-on civil war across the country. Book leaves you wanting a prequel and a sequel.

Good book

Good book can't wait for the updated version coming out on live screen. Seem plausible to be a true story, though it is not.

A Literary Work of Art

To be human is to put an ultimate value on freedom. To suppress freedom means being less than human. I see both expressions in the book. It is a classic cautionary tale.

Very intetesting- Feels like this is now...

I have the movie and watched it first. Easier to follow in the movie. So much lost when you cannot see the hatred and oppression included upon Blaxk people.
