About this listen

Owen, Kiel, and Bethany confront secrets, stolen memories, and some very familiar faces in the follow-up to the second book in the New York Times best-selling series The Story Thieves - which was called a "fast-paced, action-packed tale" by School Library Journal - from the author of the Half Upon a Time trilogy.

Owen Conners' whole life changed the day he found out his classmate Bethany was half fictional and could take him into any book in the library. Which story would they jump into next? Another fantasy, like the Kiel Gnomenfoot, Magic Thief books? Maybe something with superheroes? Owen's up for anything except mysteries - those just have too many hidden clues, twists that make no sense, and an ending you never see coming.

Then Owen wakes up in a real-life mystery with a memory that's been erased and too many questions. How did Kiel Gnomenfoot lose all of his magic? Where is Bethany? And who's the annoying guy wearing the question mark mask and Sherlock Holmes hat, taunting Owen and Kiel that Bethany is in grave danger?

Bethany is trapped in a hidden room that's slowly filling with water, and she can't escape until her friends find her. But is she imprisoned by more than just chains and a locked door? What's she hiding from Owen and Kiel?

Missing Text, be patient!

This is a wonderful series. This book was very captivating to my 8 year old son and myself, and the audio performance was just stellar!

The bad reviews made me chuckle.

True, at the beginning of the book it just says "Missing Text", the occasional word, and then a new chapter starts. Don't lose your patience. It's just a hook. Read on! :)

Great book

I love this book because it is more exiting than the first and it is very fun to listen to when you are bored and unhappy.

Stick with the opening. It makes sense after the first 5 minutes or so

The opening has a lot of “missing text” that seems like it will be impossible to listen to. But those chapters are only each about 40 seconds. Then the book gets “normal” at chapter 10 and stays that way. Lots of twists and turns and exciting discoveries along the way. It’s a fun and engaging book. Well read. My 11 y/o and I finished it in one day. Couldn’t stop listening.

This one is fun

This is the 2nd book in James Riley’s, The Story Thievespl series. I’m amazed by the twists and turns and change of direction this book takes. The first nine chapters have the narrator repeating, over and over and over, “missing text, missing text, missing text” with the odd line thrown in. In the print version, those chapters have pages of little back dashes indicating information is missing. Over the chapters that follow, the story moves forward by telling the story, but also filling in the missing chapters. It makes for an interesting read / listen. There is also a timer counting down from 2 hours (but not in real time). As a reader, or a listener, you really need to pay attention or find yourself jumping back for clarification. In the end though, it’s worth it and has me truly hooked! Wow! Going to get the next one!

Confusing, but fun!

This second book of the story thief's has a lot of twists and turns! A little hard to keep track of the different characters and timelines, but I enjoy the friendship between them. The voice actor/reader did get on my nerves at times as he got too enthusiastic with the characters when they yelled about something ....they yelled a lot!

“Missing text” for 9 chapters

Not sure what that was about but it just kept saying “missing text” over and over

Missing Text

What disappointed you about The Stolen Chapters?

Keeps repeating missing text, super disappointing. When looking now at past review I notice others had same complaint and it still hasn't been addressed by audible.
