About this listen

1870s - Missouri

Margaret "Peggy" Thomas and her husband, James, lead a simple and peaceful life; she tends to the farm while he works as sheriff in the nearby town of Bleak Knob. Their evenings are spent doing the thing they love most - being together.

One afternoon, after picking up fabric at the general store, Margaret watches helplessly as James is gunned down on the sidewalk in front of her. Days of mourning turn into weeks and then years, filled with little more than grief and alcohol.

A telegram, announcing the upcoming trial in Arizona of one of the men responsible for James' death, rouses the widow from her misery. Neither inexperience nor the prospect of a long and difficult journey will stop Margaret from facing her husband's killer.

Along the way, Margaret unexpectedly gains some new companions as she is joined by a free-spirited gypsy woman and a diminutive moonshiner. Together, they will face the danger and violence of the Old West, but only Margaret will be able to answer the question that's plagued her from the beginning: Is she seeking justice or revenge? Told from Margaret's dark point-of-view and in the epic tradition of True Grit comes The Survival of Margaret Thomas.

The book was OK. Didn’t care for the voice of the narrator. Sounds like he has been smoking for years. Deplorable scenes oh pretty gross devastation And human mutilation.

Some pretty gross seems Describe

Carol Monda’s gravelly voice and nuances made this one great read. I usually don’t listen to anything of this nature but I was more than pleasantly Surprised at how well written, the good twist and turns, the excellent reading skills of the narrator, and the storyline was magnificent. Highly recommended if I could give this more than five stars I would.

Such an unexpectedly good listen!

Great story of loss, friendship and finding ones self. It is funny at times and horrific at times. Such a good book!

Loved the reader, Carol Monda. Excellent job. The story was good but had I known there would be so many grisly details I never would have stayed this book. I kept listening because I had to find out what happened to Margaret Thomas.

Too grisly for me

It took a chapter or two to get involved with the characters, but once there I stayed for the duration. The characters showed true failings and yet the strength to endure.

Surprisingly enjoyable

Voice sounded as if they’d smoked too many cigarettes - was a bit hard to listen to

An excellent, gritty western. The storyline maintains traditional western elements, with unconventional twists. A delightful read and perfectly performed.

The narrator was perfectly cast
