About this listen

After the Robinsons - a minister, his wife, and their 4 young sons - are shipwrecked on a desert island, they must adapt to their new environment, which includes exotic birds and animals, but none of the comforts they enjoyed in their native Switzerland. Without modern conveniences or even clocks and calendars, the Robinsons must use common sense to build a home, find food, and tame the island's wild animals. Through their struggles and achievements, the courageous family not only survives, but finds a spiritual happiness that they never experienced in their civilized homeland.

Editorial reviews

Some fathers are content with teaching their children through light conversation over, say, a game of catch. Others, like Johann Wyss, write an epic tale of adventure and survival. What was initially written in hopes that Wyss could teach his children about family values and the natural world, The Swiss Family Robinson has gone on to be adored by generations for its moral lessons and exotic drama. And with veteran narrator George Guidall's thrilling performance in this production, The Swiss Family Robinson is sure to entertain many generations to come.

This is a great classic book, but the recording is not very sharp and sometimes difficult to hear clearly, everyone should read "listen" to this book maybe just try another copy.

Great classic book, not the best recording

The number of skills the family exhibited was amazing and almost unbelievable. However it was a different time and people needed better “life” and survival skills. The number of different animals shocked me. I was expecting a dinosaur at any moment.

The narrator is the perfect father in this story. I, despite the trappings of modernity, found myself wanting to join their thankful, adventurous life. What a wonderful performance!

Overall an excellent story, although it can lag a bit in parts. Much of the scientific information can be applied today, not to mention the work ethic and bravery. I wondered as I listened if I could survive under the same circumstances.

History is valid today
