Splendid reading of a Splendid book

Masterfully read by an actor's actor of yesteryear. And, Kenneth Grahame's narrative and word painting speaks for itself!

Perfect for bedtime

Michael Hordern’s voice is perfect for this story — resonant and warm. The story is slow moving and wonderfully descriptive, from the landscape to the furniture and crockery in the animals’ homes. If you have a hard time falling asleep, this is your bedtime tale.

Delightful British tale for adults and children alike

Animal animation at its finest. I especially enjoyed the animal character development and the interplay between animals and humans.

A classic children's story, beautifully narrated

Would you consider the audio edition of The Wind in the Willows to be better than the print version?

I made an attempt to read the print version when I was about 9, and I couldn't get through it. I would consider the audio version to be better. The narrator gave life to each character, and it really improved the story.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved all of the characters and how they looked out for each other and were forgiving of the faults and shortcomings of their friends.

Which scene was your favorite?

There are too many to choose just one. I loved the scenes when Mole was first getting to know Rat, particularly where he capsized Rat's boat. I loved how obliging Rat was when Mole sensed his home out in the snow and Rat insisted that they return to it. I liked the anxious build-up to the first encounter with Badger. I also enjoyed the preparations to return to Toad Hall.

Any additional comments?

There were a few departures from the main story, and I thought it meandered there. I wish the chapters were broken up more in the audio version so that I could skip some of those digressions. I was more a fan of the main narrative.

Fun

This was a fun story to hear. I think all children and adults would benefit from listening to it. Life is about relationships and these characters learn and grow as humans can.

Children's Classic

I thought I had read this book as a child, but if I did, it wasn't the story I remembered. As an adult, I find the friends in this book to be charming, well developed characters. The story was fun and I love the anthropomorphic animals. I chuckled thinking of Toad and his pockets, and Badger in his smoking jacket. Very well done!

Rereading a Childhood Favourite

My only real complaint is this is broken down into six chapters, but there are multiple chapters within. It was frustrating to navigate the chapters when I dozed off or had to step away.

The narrator's voice was pleasant; it reminded me of the BBC stop-motion series from my childhood. Sentimentally, this book it the first book I remember reading on my own in early primary school (K-2nd grades). I know there were others, but this one stood out.

A classic read with charm

Would you consider the audio edition of The Wind in the Willows to be better than the print version?

No. Nothing can replace the cognitive experience of reading printed words. However many of us do have learning disabilities and audio books are a lovely solution. In addition , a book of this quality would be ideally suited for younger readers to listen to as they develop their reading skills. I listened to it while recovering from heart surgery when fatigue made managing a book far too difficult. The lovely gentle adventures and friendships , the beautiful descriptive language - it was all very calming and restorative.
