Publisher's summary

I'm learning to embrace who and what I am, but there's one thing I can't face: the night Zak betrayed me. But even with the mysteries of our shared past hanging between us, I can't turn Zak away when he asks for my help.

Powerful fae are going missing, and when he tried to investigate, Lallakai vanished too. Now he wants me to venture with him into the territory of the Shadow Court, but its bloodthirsty courtiers don't welcome meddling druids.

Danger is gathering around us, seen and unseen. As we uncover incomprehensible clues about the missing fae, we realize this nightmare runs deeper than we imagined, and unveiling it means delving into the past-our past.

If I abandon Zak now, he'll never make it out alive. But if I stay at his side, if I face the truth of that night, it will destroy us both.

Annette Marie you outdid yourself

I mean, WOW! Out of all of the Guild Codex books this is the biggest plot twist I never saw coming!! I cannot wait to listen to the next book!!

Cliffhanger alert

I absolutely love the the entire guild codex series. It’s one of the 3 series I always buy (Guild Codex, Spellmonger and Wandering Inn). That said this one left such a cliffhanger it’s actually irritating! I am so invested in the series so I won’t drop it but I’m disappointed

Each one gets better

4 solid stars

1. I've never liked Lallakai, and until this series, I thought her name was Mallakai!
2. We finally find out what happened that fateful night, and it's really sad, but I feel like it was drawn out a little too long. Ah well.
3. Perhaps it's because they are eternal (unless someone successfully kills them), but Fae are a bloodthirsty bunch, often led by their thoughts of revenge.
4. Zak finally calls Saber out and it was right and proper. They both do a lot of maturing in this one.
5. I love that Saber sees Rikr as a friend rather than a familiar and I suspect it will have some effect on what happens in the end. At least one can hope!
6. Tim Campbell narrates Zak's POV and I'm glad they used a different voice for his chapters. I think I like Tim Campbell better than Iggy Toma's voice. In any case, it does work here.
7. I'm starting to see Saber and Zak as good matches for each other.
8. That ending!

Narrators! Again.

Why choose male and female narrator?! Chris Dukehart is the best for the series alone. When one narrator is making past (both in male and female voices), and other present (again male and female) it only leads to readers irritation, not enjoyment. If male narrator read all male lines and Chris did the same for female lines, it would be totally different experience as proven by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer in Wheel of Time series. This book however, is the same type of disaster as the Silence Fallen from Patricia Briggs.

And please, do not do cliffhangers...

Book 3 doesn't disappoint.

I usually listen to books to put me to sleep at night. I cannot do this with any Annette Marie books. i listen all day and night. Her plots twists are exciting and her stories are engaging with fully developed interesting characters. I can't wait for the next book. Please keep them coming!!!

Still have no love for Saber

Still finding it hard to like Saber. Never liked the Lady of Shadow and dislike her even more now. Rikr just gets better. Even though Zak was one of my favorites he seems so immature compared to the rest of the Guild Codex series.

Great narrators, cliche ending

A fair addition to the series, but the ending was very cliche. It left a good amount to be desired in my mind. I will obtain the next book in the series, when it comes out, because i am invested in the universe from Tori's books, robin's aadventures, to Kit's unorthodox actions... but am feeling a little meh, or lacklustre currently.

Until then end

I can't wait for the next book. The twist at the end. wow. Keep it up. Thanks for bringing back some of the characters back from the other books.
