About this listen

Emily Norton loves nothing more than losing herself within the pages of a good book. But the solitary pastime is poor preparation for participating in the dreaded London Season. Her trepidation over formally entering Society is all-encompassing, until she stumbles upon an enigmatic gentleman digging up flowers in a hedgerow. Before she can learn his name or the reason for his unusual activity, however, she is whisked into a carriage bound for London.

Henry Buckland has a secret: he cannot discern the difference between certain colors. It’s a particularly difficult disability for the curator of natural history at the British Museum, but no more challenging than his repeated attempts to outmaneuver the machinations of the town’s most notorious matchmaker. At his parents’ dinner party, he receives assistance in outwitting the persistent busy-body from a surprising source: the intriguing young lady he met on the country lane. As Emily and Henry become formally acquainted, they discover a shared love of science and nature that makes them ideally suited. However, Henry is not alone in his admiration for the young woman. As the competition to woo Emily escalates, so, too, do tensions at the museum. When an unexpected danger threatens Henry’s livelihood—and life—it appears he may not have the chance to win Emily’s heart after all.

great story!

I love how this author writes. Not only is her writing entertaining but I also learn something every time I read her work. The information about color blindness was interesting.

Just as wonderful as I'd hoped.

Sian Ann Bessey does not disappoint. A wonderful addition to an amazing series. There are very few writers that I will read books just based on the author- she is one of them. Definitely worth listening to.

Delightful & informative

4 1/2 stars. This was a really delightful story. Emily is a beautiful young woman who has led a very isolated life and is unused to navigating society. There is a rather “meet cute” between her and Henry. As the story progresses, it is obvious that they are a perfect match. Emily is quiet but extremely insightful and intrigued by Henry’s occupation as a natural science curator at the British Museum. These are the very things that interest Emily so much more than the typical interests society expects of a young woman.

Part of the storyline is Emily‘s discovery of Henry’s long kept secret of color blindness. There is therefore somewhat of a history of this disorder that also adds interest to the storyline.

A mystery is also included in the storyline with just a bit of non-detailed offscreen violence.

Overall, this was another lovely book by Sian Bessey, and it was also very well narrated in the audible version.

Okay

Sweet and started off well but a little flat in the second half. The relationship of our two protagonists was charming, and the aunt was my favorite character. I probably need a break from this narrator, especially since I listened to two in a row.
