About this listen

The Texas Panhandle was a harsh and unforgiving place, but the Zachary family managed to get by. Until their world was upended by an old enemy who started a vicious rumor about the true identity of beautiful 17-year-old Rachel Zachary. Now their neighbors want her dead, and a band of Kiowa warriors are out to claim her for their own. There's only one man who will stand up for her. But in protecting Rachel, he might just be signing his own death warrant.

Classic western

Alan LeMay has written two of the greatest westerns ever. The Searchers and this book, The Unforgiven. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the old west and the encounters between our pioneers and Native American tribes.

Excellent read

This was a great book with a lot of action and suspense. It was a good depiction of life at that time in the west. Much better than the movie.

Updated Review: Never underestimate Alan Le May

My first review was when I thought I wasn’t going to be able to finish it:
“It doesn’t help that I’m 10 chapters in and I’ve heard more about cows and cattle and sod and soddies and handwringing women than is in ten standard westerns.”
Yet the next 30 plus chapters more than made up for the slow start. The narrator who I didn’t like listening to for extended periods became less bothersome and more impressive as his various character voices came into their own. If this is your first Alan Le May go listen to The Searchers next, it’s even better and the narrator for that one is easier to listen to.

The edge of America

Extremely well written and performed book that puts you right in the reality of the clash between two cultures and the ugliness and heroism on both sides.
I rank it as LeMay’s greatest achievement.

Great Story Well Narrated

The whole book seemed pass in hardly any time at all and when it was over, I wanted more.
The narrator was the perfect one for this book. Between the author and the narrator, I could completely see the pictures they were painting.

The real Old West

A great story about the cold hard life of the Old West. It shows that hate and love aren't born out of race, but out of action and choices.

It transported me back in time to a desperate era

The tension built into one of the most powerful climaxes I've ever read. It made me catch my breath over and over again.
