About this listen

John Chu's Hugo Award-winning short story, "The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere", is now available for listeners

In the near future water falls from the sky whenever someone lies (either a mist or a torrential flood depending on the intensity of the lie). This makes life difficult for Matt as he maneuvers the marriage question with his lover and how best to "come out" to his traditional Chinese parents.

A story about honesty & human foibles

This story was funny, charming and an absolute joy to listen to. It tackles the emotional complexity of romantic relationships, the love, resentments and frustrations of families, and what it means to be honest. And water falls on people from nowhere when they lie. Even a half-truth will cause a sharp rise in humidity. I loved the premise and only wished the story was longer.

Beautiful short story and narration

Enjoyed this short story. Well deserving of the Hugo award. Narration was perfect for the story and allows the listener to get lost in the world that has been created.

Cute but incomplete

This has a very cool premise and some really nice and fleshy characters. However, it suffers from that “short story” syndrome, where it just feels unfinished. Nothing is really resolved, we only get a glimpse of the whole thing.
Still, it was interesting and entertaining.
