Herb Knoll
About this listen
As a bank executive, Herb Knoll was known as a man who could get the job done. But when Knoll lost his wife to cancer, he found few resources that could help him recover. The more he learned about the plight of widowers, from high suicide rates to physical and emotional problems, the more he became motivated to create an audiobook with fellow widowers for fellow widowers.
The Widower’s Journey, passionately narrated by Herb Knoll himself, tackles tough questions and provides advice on many topics, including:
- How men can process grief
- Keeping healthy during stressful times
- Managing a career while coping with loss
- Drawing strength from your faith
- Reentering the dating world
- Dealing with the issues that sex, dating, and marriage create
- Parenting as a widower
- Solving financial and legal problems
- Preserving your late partner’s memory for yourself and family and friends.
Knoll breaks down barriers that block men in their journeys to recovery. He encourages men to seek out the fellowship of other widowers, and he provides resources that men need to move forward.
Knoll identifies how society fails widowers, and he spells out how institutions need to change so widowers can receive the support they deserve. The Widower's Journey offers advice that can assist the friends and family of a widower as they attempt to comfort him. Learning the lessons contained in The Widower's Journey is also beneficial to women who are dating a widower and are eager to understand better what the widower has been through.

Story
Men and women grieve differently. Though both feel the pain and sorrow that come with losing a spouse, widowers start dating much sooner than widows - usually within the first year of their wife's passing. While there's nothing wrong with dating again that quickly, widowers often get into relationships before they're emotionally ready to take that step. That causes problems for them and the women they're with. That's where The Ultimate Dating Guide for Widowers comes in.

Story
The greatest fear I had during my grieving was that I was losing control, going crazy, and might make decisions that would harm myself, my family, and my friends. This included suicidal thoughts, which scared the hell out of me. I was desperate to find answers. Quickly, I found those answers would be hard to find, as resources for widowers are minimal and often of dubious value. In Widower to Widower, I've compiled the most vital information I could find on the widower experience into one book, so the listener does not have to search as hard as I had to do.

This audiobook does not look to offer a solution to grief. Rather, it provides supportive, useful guidance to help you create a life in which peace, and even gratitude, can coexist with your grief. On Death and Dying began as a theoretical book, an interdisciplinary study of our fear of death and our inevitable acceptance of it. It introduced the world to the now-famous five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the process of grieving and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, all based on Kübler-Ross' and Kessler's professional and personal experiences.

After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

Real, practical help!
Very useful and helpful. I recommend it to all widowers, though it may be more suited for a widower who is beyond the initial shock as they may be ready or in need of more practical guidance. Due to the practical nature of the material I found it better to listen at an accelerated speed. I fully endorse this book.

Religious parts ruined the book for me
An otherwise great book was ruined by the inclusion of the Abrahamic religious chapter and references. Mr. Knoll forgets that not all widowers are followers of these religious paths, and as such, he puts off those of us who don't. He could have made this book truly universal simply by leaving out these references. A shame, as it can be of great help to all widowers.
