Publisher's summary

By the author of the New York Times-best-selling Labyrinth, a story of two lives touched by war and transformed by courage.

In the winter of 1928, still seeking some kind of resolution to the horrors of World War I, Freddie is traveling through the beautiful but forbidding French Pyrenees. During a snowstorm, his car spins off the mountain road. Dazed, he stumbles through the woods, emerging in a tiny village, where he finds an inn to wait out the blizzard. There he meets Fabrissa, a lovely young woman also mourning a lost generation.

Over the course of one night, Fabrissa and Freddie share their stories. By the time dawn breaks, Freddie will have unearthed a tragic, centuries-old mystery, and discovered his own role in the life of this remote town.

Empathic Ghost History

Kate Mosse is gifted in weaving ancient religious history with the present through an empathic character's receptivity. I had thoroughly enjoyed reading Labyrinth several years ago, and I knew that she was playing with spirits, again. I liked being read to this time in the audible version. Winter Ghosts is about releasing the past in order to live fully in the present, and it is not a frightening ghost story even as it contains the horror of war. I wanted perhaps one more surprise or twist to counteract the knowledge I had ahead of the narrator, Freddie Watson, but for the most part, the novel delivers.

My Kind of Ghost Story!

Kate Mosse is one of my favorite authors, and this story for some reason "haunts" me. I love how her descriptive writing sets and carries the mood of the story. You feel the cold and how it mirrors Freddie's feelings of hopelessness & loss. While you know the story's destination, the journey is what captivates. If you want blood, guts & gore in your ghost story, this isn't for you. But if you like the old style ghost story that takes place as much in the mind as in the surroundings, The Winter Ghosts might be just your cup of tea. And not to forget, kudos to Julian Rhind-Tutt for a superb narration.

Delightful Listen

A quiet ghost/love story elegantly told by a man stepping out of the shadow of sorrow into the sunshine of hope. It has been beautifully written by Kate Mosse and perfectly narrated by Julian Rhind-Tutt, whose sensitive performance allows listeners to thoroughly enjoy the sweet sadness of the tale. The story is about grief and loss, but it is no way gloomy. On the contrary, listening to it is an experience akin to viewing a beautiful winter scene through the window of a cozy, warm room. Sheer pleasure.

Haunting Tale

Excellent story based on historical facts about the Cathar persecutions in the MiddleAges. Narrator has perfect voice to convey the plot with a sense of mystery & dignity.
