Publisher's summary

The Wisdom of Compassion offers rare insights into the Dalai Lama’s life and his efforts to translate compassion into action through deeply engaging, behind-the-scene stories about his interactions with remarkable people from all walks of life.

This is the Dalai Lama at his most human, and most humane. We see how he approaches the world with playfulness, optimism, and a profound empathy for the suffering of others. Through his own conduct, he shows us the tangible benefits of practicing kindness, forgiveness, and compassion. And he demonstrates that opening our hearts and minds to others is the surest path to true happiness.

The Wisdom of Compassion is an intensely personal portrait of the Dalai Lama. It recounts the story of his friendship with a blind Irishman, how they first met and how, in later meetings, the Dalai Lama comes to call him his one and only hero. It explores the Dalai Lama’s collaboration with a neuroscientist and how it results in significant discoveries about the human brain. It also brings to life poignant accounts of his uncommon encounters with a little beggar girl, a disabled boy in a critical-care ward, a man who trains grandmothers to become solar engineers, and many others.

The Dalai Lama’s wisdom principles revolve around the practical application of compassion. Enhanced by his seven decades of practice and elucidated through captivating anecdotes of his own experiences, they will help readers lead more fulfilling lives. As the Dalai Lama has written many years ago: If you want others to be happy, practice compassion; if you want yourself to be happy, practice compassion.

Why is this not required reading in schools??

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The man is amazing, and Victor Chan did a great job writing this. I was really pleased with the narrator. Well worth the read even in prior books written by others about the Dalai Lama were not to your liking. This one is a gem.

A MUST READ

I cannon emphasize enough how important it is to read this book no matter which religion you belong to.
In this troubled world we all have to follow the philosophy depicted herein.
I have read several books by the Dalai Lama and he always gives me such peace.
I have the physical book and am glad I do, following it and the audio version is recommended.
The narrator, mr. Rich Orlow, has a pleasant voice.
My thanks to all involved, JK.

The compassion

Being compassionate is easy yet difficult, but what I learned is if I can keep practicing in smallest way, it is not impossible!!

Interesting anecdotes about the Dalai Lama

This book is a light hearted and candid look at His Holiness the Dalai Lama during relatively recent very high profile events (and some lower key events, though still very important & informative, if not more so).

You can appreciate his putting into action what he says, and how he sees himself in world events. As a religious leader he attends events in which people seek his advice and the behind-the-scenes commentary in this book is very welcome to further understand some background stories at these events. Also very interesting is His Holiness' interest with western scientific methods to validate if what he says and believes holds true under scientific scrutiny by world leading scientists.

Narration is actually very good, at first I was taken aback by the different voices the narrator used, however after the initial surprise the reading flowed very well.

This is not really a book about in-depth Buddhist teaches and analysis, but rather a behind-the-scenes look following the Dalai Lama through some recent events.

I liked this book.

Calming, insightful, and wonderful

What did you like best about this story?

This is a fantastic way to start your day. There isn't a real narrative which normally bothers me, but didn't here. This is a collection of experiences and encounters with an amazing human being.
