Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever.
Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems. Her own security is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to draw attention in a tiny southern town.
The mystery of Abigail Lowery intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and a professional level. Her sharp, logical mind, her secretive nature, her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, even if he doesn’t know what - and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.
Accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, Gleason is about to walk into the sights of very powerful and dangerous men. And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Would you listen to The Witness again? Why?
The story was very well done and kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time. My husband even enjoyed it as well. I wished I had bought the unabridged audio due to I feel you would have gotten a lot more of the details I felt was missing! But a worth while purchase none the less!Great Story!

What did you love best about The Witness?
I really enjoyed the "I'm not a helpless female" angle.Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes it was paced well. What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?
She's a good reader. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, but none are, have too much going on.Any additional comments?
To males who might venture into Nora Robert's novels. This is a genre of story I enjoy but was pretty hesitant about doing a female author as I have found they tend to hugely overstate the physical abilities of a 100 pound female. In this book, she doesn't try. Everything the heroin does seems believable and in context. On the negative side the story is a bit shy of physical encounters although the story line is carried well without them. The heated stuff is slanted from a woman's point of view but was fine for my male ears.
Nora Roberts does an excellent job of wrapping up the story and it was an enjoyable listen.
