About this listen

Four-time Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author N.K. Jemisin crafts a glorious tale of identity, resistance, magic and myth.

All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.

In order to defeat him, and the Enemy who holds his purse strings, the avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world in order to bring her down for good and protect their world from complete destruction.

N.K. Jemisin’s Great Cities Duology, which began with The City We Became and concludes with The World We Make, is a masterpiece of speculative fiction from one of the most important writers of her generation.

Great fun story with virtuosic narration

N. K. Jemisin is a reliably skilled writer. One of the best in spec fic right now. Like its first part, this book is a bit more humorous and much more overtly political than her usual work. It might turn off people with a right-wing mindset. Since my politics is much like hers, I got a kick out of it. Also, as a NYC native, I appreciated the handling of the city.

Robin Miles gives one of the most impressive narration performances I have ever heard. It is stunning and remarkable. The accents, the emotion, the characterization. Even if the story hadn't been good, I would have marveled at her work here. She is helped out by some really good audio work that adds to the presentation.

Very satisfying!

I’m very pleased with the story. It felt finished and the payoff at the end felt right. And Robin Mills is stellar talent. I’ll listen to any and alll of her work. She brings this story to life, perfect in every way.

Better than the first

I enjoyed this novel even more than The City We Became. Really outstanding writing. There are moments I find challenging because of some of Jemisin’s outlook, but it never took away from the enjoyment of the novel.

Imaginative and laugh out loud fun!

N.K.J is a master of worldbuilding! the whole concept of this series is just so unique and creative! there are so many moments that will make you literally laugh out loud. and unlike her brilliant broken Earth trilogy, this one doesn't leave you heartbroken at the ending of the story as well.

The Sort of Story That Makes Me Fall in Love with Fiction Again

The first book was fantastic, and this one went even further beyond. N K Jemisin has one of the best authorial voices I’ve ever heard. I’ve read almost a hundred books this year, and many of them run together after a while, but this one is the sort of spectacular that stays with me.

Surprised by this incredible work

After I read the first book, I was thinking the sequel was going to be boring but I loved it. I do think that Aislyn could’ve been written better. But that’s just the opinion of a Staten Islander, I definitely love the dynamics and the off chapters like Bell and Relia. Bc with Bell you get the perspective of the outsider looking in. I love it. Also showing the fight through the eyes of Relia was a great twist! Also! Robin Myles is an incredible she really sells the 50 accents! I love how unapologetically queer the characters in this book are!

Satisfying

This was a really satisfying conclusion(?) to this story. And once again the production quality of this audiobook is impeccable. Robin Miles gives a fantastic performance, and there's some really evocative sound design. I loved every second of this book. Even the credits are a pleasure to listen to.

A fun ride!

By far one of the most unique urban fantasy concepts I have read. The story was amazing, and the audiobook narrator was excellent.
