About this listen

Young Jody lives with his ma and pa on a farm in backwoods Florida. Life is hard there: cutting wood, planting fields, hauling water from a distant sinkhole. It is dangerous: wolves and bears roam the night. It’s also lonely for a young boy. One spring day, Jody’s pa kills a deer for meat. When Jody sees her spotted fawn in the brush, he convinces his father they should bring the fawn home. Thus begins a year when deer and boy are never far from each other. But the day will come when Jody must make a terrible choice between his beloved pet and his family’s survival.

The Yearling, published 50 years ago, is an enduring classic which won the Pulitzer Prize. As it follows Jody from childhood to the first steps of adulthood, it has touched the hearts of readers of all ages. Now, with Tom Stechschulte’s warm narration, this moving story will delight an even wider audience.

Wonderful book, good story, some predictable elements, but the "twist" was unexpected. I expected a whole different reason for the "big decision." This was better. Warm, authentic and suitable for all ages, cultures and interests. Narrator very good. Recommended -- in fact, should be required reading for students of the human community. Tolerance, humor, survival, family, fathers and sons.... just great.

Must read for any age over 10. Great themes still apply today. Great dialogue and relatable characters. One of the few books set in the south during 1800s that does not contain offensive material. The narration was perfect. I could not stop listening.

While driving across the state of Florida, I happen to pawn the homestead of Rawlings and was immediately brought back to the age of 17 when I first read Cross Creek. My husband and I were fortunate to tag along on a private tour of the homestead, and I was immediately inspired to listen to her Pulitzer Prize winning The Yearling. The story is beautifully told, and was perfect for a long drive across the the marshland and swamps, the hammock and the rivers. I will say the narration was not always fantastic, but held my interest through to the very end. Thank you for giving this classic novel space inside audible.

Now one of my all time favorites. My grandmother always recommended it, I only wish now I could talk to her about it. It is old Florida, nature and story telling at its finest.

Slow start but incredible

I read this twice as a kid. I lobed it. But when I listened to it now as an adult I was and am struggling with depression. Not a good time to read this sort of stuff. Haunted me for weeks.

As someone who grew up in this area, I loved how I knew all the places in the book. I love how it was written with a love for the region as well as a love for innocence and life itself. Remarkable story, and I will never forget it.

So much love in this story.
