Publisher's summary

Lad, a handsome collie, rules the Place for his master and mistress. With his sleek mate, Lady, at his side, he chases away neighborhood dogs and intruders. But one day, when the master brings home a spirited young male, Lady starts to spend all her time running with the newcomer. Will Lad be able to win back her loyalty? For Lad, the excitement is just beginning. Throughout this classic story, he faces one thrilling adventure after the other. A poisonous snake, the police, and hostile city streets are only a few of his challenges.

Albert Payson Terhune first recounted his own dog’s exploits in a series of short stories for magazines. When readers of all ages praised Lad, Terhune collected the tales into the heartwarming volume that has captivated young readers for over 70 years. With John McDonough’s skillful narration, Lad, his furry friends and foes, and the humans in his life spring vividly to life.

A story of my childhood

Our breeder gave this book to me while I was anxiously awaiting my tricolor Collie pup, Lady. I was in middle school at the time and had already devoured all of James Herriot’s books. This book was a treasure then and it continues to be now- 40 years later. What a joy to find it on Audible and the performance did it justice.

If you have ever loved or been loved by a dog...

What did you love best about Lad, a Dog?

The adventures written of here are absolutely believable regarding any dog's behavior and the love and devotion of man and dog to one another is evident on every page. The collie nature is described in its most reverent and honest manner. Proper behavior, human and dog, and pride in ones conduct, human and dog, are so refreshing in this book. Best yet? It's all true. You can visit the New Jersey property of the Master (Bert Terhune) and pay respects to Lad and the many other valiant dogs of The Place.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Master. He was fair, honest, kind, firm, right, and bigger than life.

Which scene was your favorite?

The most trying was the final fight scene. It was horrendous to read and for anyone who has experienced a fight to the death - all too real.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As a child, I loved the feel of the book but even as an adult, the loyalty, kindness, and honesty - so rare in our lives today - brings a tear to my heart.

Any additional comments?

If you have ever loved a dog or have ever been loved by a dog, this book, and all the Terhune stories, will bring a warmth, a sense of adventure, of honesty, of time, of beauty, of devotion to your heart. If you've ever been owned a collie, well, this book is more dear than one can imagine.

The stories

My Dad read these stories to me and who ever in my family wanted to listen. Our family had quite a few dogs as pets, and I had 5 wonderful Guide Dogs throughout my life. I thought I’d listen to Lad’s stories as I’m on my way to celebrate a service for my Dad this weekend. My Father was a WW II. Vet, and he read Albert Payson Terhune’s stories a long time before he read them to us. He also read us books by Jack London and many others about the things he loved like dogs, and the wilderness. He took us for walks and fishing and I’ve grown up with a love for the outdoors and nature because of him, and the talks we had after reading these kind of stories.
