Publisher's summary

Dear Lover of the Yogic Arts....

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, although simple and concise in their construct, are pieces of highly concentrated wisdom. Woven together, they are the great synchronized mosaic that illustrates the ultimate manifestation of a fully realized spiritual existence. Students of yoga will come to appreciate how beautifully they are stitched alongside one another into a meditative cohesive matrix, rippling out from a sense of peace flowering within.

This edition of Charles Johnston's interpretation of Patanjali's magnificent sequence includes original calligraphic illustrations created during the narrator's own meditation practice. These images are meant to serve as sources of visual focus and inspiration for the listener in their own daily yoga practice. Ilia's enriched version is a priceless addition to the library of any practitioner of yoga.

Namaste.

Very soothing experience

The narrators tone adds a level of relaxing to this translation. I really appreciated the tone throughout the whole audiobook. I've used this recording as an assistance for my own meditation as well. Strongly recommend!

A very original approach to a timeless classic!

As someone who has practiced yoga for over decade, I'm always on the lookout for new editions of the Yoga Sutras. To be honest, I tried this version out not knowing what to expect as the retail sample starts off talking about calligraphy. The images that are included with this audiobook are stunning complements to a 100 year old translation/commentary and a text that has been translated and interpreted tons of times and is a key element to any yogi's journey. The narrator's soothing voice and cadence puts you pretty close to a meditative state. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a new twist to a timeless work of philosophy!

Not Great

This interpretation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is a strained effort to tie them to Judeo Christian teachings. Not very enjoyable. Also listening was difficult because it was hard to discern the actual sutra from the commentary.

Poorly Organized

Narrator has a nice voice, but is in too big a hurry. Impossible to discern between text and commentary. Disappointing interpretation by European. Save your money.

Narrated WWWAAYY too quickly

This book can be absorbed better if it is read slower. She narrates so quickly that before you can even take in and contemplate what she said-she is on to a different idea and different topic. Haha it is manic instead of contemplative. Nice voice- just wayyyy to fast.

A very Christian dogmatic interpretation.

This version as opposed to that of vivekananda interprets the yoga sutras through a very Western and Christian lens. There is a lot of interpretation beyond the literal translation and examples of the meaning which are outside of the scope of Patanjali. Patanjali lived and wrote before Newton, for example. Newton is discussed and referenced: these are completely out of the context. I would have preferred a more literal translation instead of this interpretation of the text.
