About this listen

A Christian historical romance novel

Adrien Lockman is through with the political unrest and bloodshed in his home country of France, so he sets off to the Canadian territory's mountain frontier, in search of a place where a man can live his own life in peace. The last thing he expects to find is a woman, half-starved and half-frozen in a shack nestled among the towering peaks of the great Rocky Mountains.

Mary Standish thought she'd finally found a place where she was accepted, trapping with her husband for the Hudson Bay Company. But when he dies after a gruesome grizzly fight, she determines to carry on their work. After all, life in these remote mountains is better than enduring the scorn and snubs of "civilized" folk. When she's forced to face a winter harder than any she's endured yet, her stubbornness may just be the death of her. Until a stranger appears at her ramshackle door.

Adrien had planned to explore the mountain country all winter before he settles down to build a farm in the spring, but he can't leave this woman to die in the elements. Even though she seems desperate for him to go. As Mary regains strength, she's torn between wanting to save her dignity, and craving the respect of this man who's slipped past her defenses. As the winter worsens, the truth becomes all too real - the only way they'll survive is together.

A sweet, quick historical romance in the Rockies..

This Freedom Journey by Misty Beller is listed a Christian historical novel, but truth be told, I didn't really feel like I was listening to a Christian novel, as I sometimes do with others. If you aren't really into religion in your novels, I would still recommend this one to you. This is a cute, clean historical romance that takes place in the Rocky Mountains in the wintertime. Mary's husband has recently passed away and Mary finds herself pregnant and alone in the wilderness. Adrien is passing through looking for the perfect place to lay down dome roots when he stumbles across Mary, looking weak and trying to survive alone in the harsh winter environment. Well, needless to say, Mary and Adrien grow closer and that's all I'll say so as not to give away any spoilers. This was a sweet, quick listen and though the story wasn't the most original I've listened to, it follows the old format and gives the reader their HEA. If the summary sounds like something that you'd enjoy, I'd definitely recommend it!

Leonor Woodworth did an excellent job narrating this book. She brought the perfect amount of emotion to Mary and Adrien, which brought them to life while listening to the story. She used an accent for Adrien, and though sometimes accents can be off-putting, Adrien's accent didn't bother me at all. I'd happily listen to any stories narrated by Ms. Woodworth. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Beautiful Story

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story of Adrien and Mary—2 characters we met in earlier books of the Heart of the Mountains series who intrigued me from the get-go. I think readers will be captivated by Adrien’s inner strength and faith as well as Mary’s journey to her own brand of peace. Snowstorms, mountains, wilderness, wolves, and a lovable mule—you can’t go wrong with this story!

Beautiful Story

Historical romances are always a joy to listen to, and this one is absolutely beautiful. This is my first Misty M. Beller book, and I loved it. Although part of a series, this book stands alone. Adrien Lockman unhappy with his home in France, makes his way to Canada and finds Mary Standish in her isolated cabin. The weather is horrible, Mary is recently widowed, pregnant and struggling under the harsh conditions. When these two meet up, it's like a miracle for each of them, though neither will admit it at first. Mary is a very strong character, wanting to do things for herself. The unexpected cold has her at a disadvantage and when Adrien shows up, his help is definitely needed. These two have a little banter back and forth, but their situation has forced them together. Adrien is the perfect gentleman, helpful and has come into her life at the perfect time. But has it been long enough since her husband's death? And how long will he stay? There are a lot of feelings they each have to work through and in the end find their way to each other.

Leonor A Woodworth has a way of storytelling that always captures my attention. She can give inflections in her voice that drag you in and make you feel each thing the character does. In this case, Mary has a lot happening, with her mourning, her baby and the donkey(you have to listen to hear about him!), she goes through a lot of different situations and moods. Adrien is there as her rock, and Woodworth gives him the voice of reason and warmth. A beautiful listen, I will be catching up on the rest of the series.

This Freedom Journey A Heart of the Mountains Novella by Misty M. Beller
June 18, 2018
This is a wonderful tale full of heartache and mixed with the healing power of God and the patient, slow love of a gentle man!  Many romance books talk about love at first sight or display a love story that happens really quick, but this book shows how it's important to wait on God's timing!  Beautifully written

I also enjoyed the audiobook version on Jan 19, 2020! The narration was perfect for this story and series! Leonor speaks softly but with precise cadence and is a marvel at the various character voices!

Traveling with God

Mary had lots of heartbreak and sadness but she was a survivor. Living along in the frozen mountains after the loss of her husband, she didn't know if she would survive . When Adrian came along she was afraid and didn't want his help but he helped anyway and tried to keep a distance between them.I loved the story and highly recommend listening to this book

This Freedom Journey

This Freedom Journey is a sweet historical romance. A blustery winter in the Rocky Mountains and two souls helping each other survive. The story started off a bit slow for me, but the more I listened, the more I was drawn in. I loved having the preview for another story provided at the end.

Leonor A. Woodworth did a wonderful job with the narration. I love how she brought the characters to life. Adrien’s accent was perfect.
