About this listen

Lady Cordelia Daventry may be a spinster, but she has not given up all hope. When she finds herself alone with the well-known rogue, Nathaniel Lowell, Viscount Wolverton, she embraces her chance to experience desire. Finding herself in a delicate condition, she turns to Lady Celia Kendal for help. The last thing she expects Celia to do is share her secret with Nathaniel.

Nathaniel may be a rogue, but he is not without honor. When he discovers what he has done, he sets out to make an honorable woman of Cordelia. The last thing he expects is for her to run. Still, he is resolved to marry her at any cost - and marry her, he will.

Cordelia and Nathaniel cannot escape the consequences of their passion, but neither can they agree on a path forward. They engage in a battle of will and wit as they discover what truly matters. But knowing and having are two different things.

Nonsensical Heroine, Bracketed by A LOT of Steam

Nonsensical Heroine, Swoony Hero, Bracketed by A LOT of Steam

Even if you are used to reading steamy Regency romances, the first chapter of this book may surprise you, as it did me! The heroine is a young lady on the brink of spinsterhood who decides to offer herself to a known rogue (and family friend) to have a night of passion so she can have something to tuck away and look back on in her bleak future. We actually see this first chapter from the hero's perspective, where he's more than a little titillated that this young woman, whom he's known to be a quiet, shrinking-into-the-wallpaper young woman, might actually be a bit of a wanton woman! Before they consummate the act, he actually considers she might have pulled this stunt with others before him. But it soon becomes very apparent that he's her first. Nearly as soon as the act is done, he proposes marriage since he has ruined her. She turns him down several times that night. After this steamy beginning, most of the book is about her wanting to lead her version of what she wants her life to be, not what others want her to do, even when her circumstances drastically change. At times, she seems nonsensical, from the very beginning when she is so openly sensual and intimate as an unmarried young Regency woman to when she believes that her changed circumstances are entirely under her control. I sincerely doubt Regency gentlewomen would have thought in either of those ways. Both are much more modern sensibilities. I loved the hero; he's far too swoony to be stuck with this single-minded, sometimes ding-y heroine. Sometimes, you feel bad for him being stuck with this woman! The epilogue, taking place a few years in the future, is very sweet, and after a difficult road—caused mainly by the heroine—they have found their HEA. The narrator of this is British, and the accent goes perfectly with the story. If you like Regency erotica with a long gap of heroine-caused angst between the two intimate scenes, you may enjoy this audiobook.

Independent Women

This is an adult historical romance novella. The story line itself is ok, but I felt it was a bit of a miss. It progressed from being determined to be single, to married with a baby on the way very fast. I liked Nathaniel a little and could sympathize with his feelings and angst. I could not connect with Cordelia.
Narration was pretty good.

Enjoyable

The two main characters basically have had emotional neglect while growing up. They come together after the heroine hears the hero being berated by his father and she offers comfort. This comfort leads to a pregnancy, but she fights to maintain her independence. How they reconcile their goals makes for an interesting listening experience. It is about a two hour read so was just long enough to keep my attention.

Good premise for a story

I really liked the premise of this story, but there was just too much animosity for me to enjoy it. The only happiness we get in the entire story is in the epilogue, and it’s unsatisfying that the ending before that is simply them deciding not to be mad at each other anymore. I would have preferred if that entire fight was only a portion of the book instead of them fighting for the entire book. This story had the potential for so much steam but the two steamy scenes we are given are rushed. If they were going to be angry for the entire book, there could at least have been an anger bang or two.

I could understand how hurt both of the main characters were and I could understand why, but I couldn’t feel it. Great writing has to make me feel the characters emotions. The emotions were too one-dimensional though because the only emotions we get are bitterness and anger.

The narration was done by a male, which is not necessarily a problem but he used a grandma voice for Cecilia even though she was the same age as Cordelia. Other than that, the narration was fine but I would prefer if narrators didn’t use different voices at all to them using weird ones.

I hope that this author releases an updated edition in the future because this is still a story worth telling.

Parents have a lot to answer for!

A Regency Romance, but with a twist. The woman would prefer to be a spinster than to be married to a rogue, regardless of his title.
However, a look at each other's formative years, can give an understanding of why each behaves As they do.

Happy To Recommend!

I just listened to the audiobook version of this friends to lovers story and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well written, is of a good length, has some realistic characters and the narration was really good.
Cordelia is quite a headstrong young lady and once she gets an idea into her head, she proves to be quite stubborn, much to the utter frustration of Nathaniel, but somehow they manage to work out their differences and find their happy ever after.

Fierce Love

This book by Amanda was a quick satisfying read. The story of two unlikely people fighting for the same thing not realizing they were needing and wanting it. Love how Celia could see the truth for these two and helped them find their HEA.

The narrator was engaging and had me not wanting the story to end.

I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

Taking Responsibility

This story begins a bit strangely for a Regency. After over-hearing Nathaniel being verbally abused by his father, Lady Cordelia offers him comfort in a very physical way. (Very uncommon for a lady of that time.) They are intimate, and a pregnancy results. Nathaniel promptly determines to marry Cordelia. Meanwhile, Cordelia has heard of Nathaniel's roguish nature and thinks he is only marrying her for the child's sake, and she wants LOVE, so she intends to run away and raise the child by herself. However, the betrayal of a friend, interfering parents, and a determined Nathaniel see them ended up wed, to Cordelia's dismay and anger. Will Nathaniel and Cordelia ever see eye to eye? Could they possibly fall in love? This is one of those stories where the MCs really needed to talk. I had some trouble connecting with Cordelia's brattish stubbornness, when she initiated the whole encounter in the first place, and I respected Nathaniel for trying to do the right thing. I could certainly understand Cordelia's motivation in wanting to be independent and not be forced into marriage, but she seemed a woman before her time. There really was no other option for her in the Regency era. Despite these quibbles, I did enjoy the story. It's a quick listen, with plenty of steam.

I enjoyed the narration. It really captured the essence of the characters and their emotions.
