About this listen

An Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal best seller.

From New York Times best-selling author Catherine Ryan Hyde comes a gripping and emotional novel about friendship, motherhood, and the journey toward finding a place to call home.

Brooke is a divorced single mom, financially strapped, living with her mother, and holding tight to the one thing that matters most: her two-year-old daughter, Etta. Then, in a matter of seconds, Brooke’s life is shattered when she’s carjacked. Helpless and terrified, all Brooke can do is watch as Etta, still strapped in her seat, disappears into the Los Angeles night.

Miles away, Etta is found by Molly, a homeless teen who is all too used to darkness. Thrown away by her parents, and with a future as stable as the wooden crate she calls home, Molly survives day to day by her wits. As unpredictable as her life is, she’s stunned to find Etta, abandoned and alone. Shielding the little girl from more than the elements, Molly must put herself in harm’s way to protect a child as lost as she is.

Out of one terrible moment, Brooke’s and Molly’s desperate paths converge, and an unlikely friendship across generations and circumstances is formed. With it, Brooke and Molly will come to discover that what’s lost - and what’s found - can change in a heartbeat.

I wish there were more!

I wish there were an epilogue so we could find out how Brooke, Molly, & Etta's lives together turned out.

Enjoyable feel good story

Brooke is a mother of a 2 year old toddler who is temporarily living with her mother following her divorce. A horrible, frightening car jacking results in the disappearance of her beloved daughter. This unbearable occurrence sets the stage for the remainder of the story in which a street child is involved in the drama. There is nothing outstanding about this story, nor would I describe it as good literature, however, the story is realistic and the characters are believable. It moves at a good, quick pace that keeps the reader wanting to continue reading to see how the story develops. I enjoyed the experience and thought the narrators did an excellent job.

Touching Story

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. I usually read phsych thrillers, but have recently been shifting to new genres because I just can’t take some of the deprived subject matter any longer.

This story was touching and I thought the narrating was excellent. I do listen to my books at a quicker speed so sometimes that improves the story by moving at a quicker pace.

Recommend to anyone looking to this genre for a good story that won’t bore you.

This book is great your heart. A heart warning story, of good and bad in people. And those who stand up for those who can't.

Most wonderful

I listen to multiple books a week. I’ve never been so touched and loved a book so much. I listened twice to this one back to back. This book speaks in so many ways.

I too was a brave girl, quiet girl.

I’m now a brave woman and not so quiet ❤️

Wonderful story

What a wonderful story. Some things in life, the more fortunate forget those who struggle. We just never know why someone else's story and why they chose that path. Great story, awesome narrator.

This book and another are my favorites of hers. The other is Walk Me Home. They make me feel warm, content, and home.

Loved it so much

This had a great ending and I listened the whole way through. It had interesting turns at every corner and would love a short story or a smaller book to let us know what happens after!
