About this listen

They meet in a ferocious snowstorm. She is a young teacher with a secret past. He is the cool, black-caped stranger who unexpectedly comes to her rescue. Between these two unlikely strangers, desire is instantaneous...and utterly impossible to resist.

Stranded together in a rustic country inn, Lucius Marshall, who is the Viscount Sinclair, and Frances Allard share a night of glorious, unforgettable passion. But Frances knows her place, and it is far from the privileged world of the sensual aristocrat. Due to begin her teaching position at Miss Martin's School in Bath, Frances must try to forget that one extraordinary night - and the man who touched her with such exquisite tenderness and abandon.

But Frances cannot hide forever. And when fate once again throws them together, Lucius refuses to take no for an answer. If Frances will not be his wife, he will make her his mistress. So begins an odyssey fraught with intrigue, one that defies propriety and shocks the straitlaced ton. For Lucius's passionate, single-minded pursuit is about to force Frances to give up all her secrets - except one - to win the heart of the man she already loves.

I love Mary Balogh her stories. This is a new series for me to start. I loved it. The female lead was very annoying and even though I understood her I still hated the problems she created for herself by being dishonest with the man she loved.

Lovely story with annoying female lead

I adore this story! The narrator was perfect and made listening even more wonderful. I laughed out loud and teared up. Truly a delight!

This was a great story. I really enjoyed it. I was amused all the way through.

Excellent Story

This could have been a great love story and a strong women-theme EVEN with a little less explicitness of the intimate scenes. It was sad for the women in the day. The strong love between the two main characters was endearing.

Love the historic theme about London

This is the best romance novel I've ever heard. Not too much explicit sex, and reasonable story line. I LOVED it.

Great Book

Every girl wants a man she adores to do exactly as the hero does in this lovely tale. While the pace is a bit slow, the love story is worth it.

What Every Girl Wants

I like the way the story starts off and how the romance develops. Frances is a strong woman and you must remember the time period and how women are viewed and the rights they do not have. However, the attraction is there and I like the way Frances protects herself emotionally. Rosalyn Landor is great.

Nice Start To A Series

This story was good for the most part -especially at the beginning. Unfortunately, it dragged on and on and on. I got so sick to death of the heroine constantly saying “I can’t” without explanation over and over and over. If I could have skipped a good 1/3 of the book where one lame rejection after another is thrown at the hero the book would have been much more pleasant to finish.

Good but dragged on

I was very pleasantly surprised with this book! I’ve been on a historical romance kick, and a lot of them have basically the same story arch. This one was refreshingly different- independent female lead who has risen beyond her damaging past, flawed but believable main characters, not same old- same old for sex scenes, and a well-paced story. Yes, the dialogue may not have been period-appropriate, but that did not detract from the story. It’s a free book; I’m not expecting Jane Austin level wit and banter (I realize that is also free, but you understand the comparison I am trying to make!). Overall, an enjoyable read that I would happily listen to again without cringing from infantilizing clichés found in other books of this genera.

Redeeming character arch

Maybe it was the author's goal to make readers frustrated, but it just made me tired. I'm not saying the Viscount didn't have his bossy and know-it-all personality, but the woman he loved, Frances, was just so stubborn and frustrating!!! All her problems were because she was too secretive! If she'd just been honest (with everyone) right from the start, she'd never have had her problems! But of course, the author would not have had a story then. I was frustrated by the end of the story. And Frances ended up doing what she could have about a quarter of the was into the book!

I was frustrated!
