About this listen

Two identical twin sisters and former child actors have grown apart—until one disappears, in this “cleverly crafted and psychologically nuanced” (Time) suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Things.

“An addictive thriller that will keep readers burning through pages . . . sneakily hypnotic.”—Los Angeles Times

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Public Library, PopSugar

“You be me, and I’ll be you,” I whispered.

As children, Sam and Elli were two halves of a perfect whole: gorgeous identical twins whose parents sometimes couldn’t even tell them apart. They fell asleep to the sound of each other’s breath at night, holding hands in the dark. And once Hollywood discovered them, they became B-list child TV stars, often inhabiting the same role.

But as adults, their lives have splintered. After leaving acting, Elli reinvented herself as the perfect homemaker: married to a real estate lawyer, living in a house just blocks from the beach. Meanwhile, Sam has never recovered from her failed Hollywood career, or from her addiction to the pills and booze that have propped her up for the last fifteen years.

Sam hasn't spoken to her sister since her destructive behavior finally drove a wedge between them. So when her father calls out of the blue, Sam is shocked to learn that Elli’s life has been in turmoil: her husband moved out, and Elli just adopted a two-year-old girl. Now she’s stopped answering her phone and checked in to a mysterious spa in Ojai. Is her sister just decompressing, or is she in trouble? Could she have possibly joined a cult? As Sam works to connect the dots left by Elli’s baffling disappearance, she realizes that the bond between her and her sister is more complicated than she ever knew.

I’ll Be You shows Janelle Brown at the top of her game: a story packed with surprising revelations and sharp insights about the choices that define our families and our lives—and could just as easily destroy them.

Great reunion between Janelle Brown and Julia Whelan

I don’t know why some people gave this one negative reviews. I’ve been anxiously waiting for Brown’s next book since Pretty Things and this didn’t disappoint ;)

Stick with it, it's good.

Excellent story. I didn't want it to end. I loved the storyline of the twin sisters. The loyalty and bond between them that continued throughout the story was sweet. I loved the happy evening.

4.5 stars!!

With this author and narrators, it's nearly impossible to go wrong. This story is split into two - half to each twin. Former child stars, one is a recovering addict and one, seemingly the "good" twin, joins a cult. The story was very good, but, to me, SO FRUSTRATING because I just don't get how intelligent people fall prey to these crazy cults. Sadly, it happens all the time, and this is a realistic example of how and why. Julia Whelan is a superb narrator, and Kate Rudd is great, too.

An interesting story

This was an interesting story. I liked the Sam character and the narrator the most. I liked Pretty Things better, over all.

Wonderful and smart

This one was hard to put down. Once again, another clever, interesting group of main characters, thoughtfully developed.

Whelan & Janelle Brown

Glorious- I love Janelle Brown. Pretty Things was my favorite til I’ll Be You. I’m in recovery from opioid dependence and when I was a teen I was sent to the troubled teen industry- which is the legacy of the Synanon cult, so I really loved how much I could relate to both characters. Julia Whelan is my favorite narrator. Even if you have no addiction or cult experiences to relate to, I think it’s an incredible book. I kept resetting the sleep timer two nights in a row so I could keep reading. I find the bad reviews of both Whelan’s performance (she is one of the most sought after women in the business, she also narrates for AUDM which reads the user long form journalism articles) -and the plot absolutely baffling. I encourage if you’re on the fence because of the few bad reviews that audible put at the top despite the averaged mean of reviews being a 4.7/5.0 - disregard them. Brown is one of my favorite American women authors of the genre and our time. This was a “I can get through another weekday without sleep so I can stay up for another chapter,” book for me and I finished it in less than 72 hours. Try it. It’s awesome.

Loved it

Loved the way the book was written. Going back in past tense then to present time. Like the narrators as well.
