About this listen

A historical fantasy that blends ageless themes of friendship and love into a quixotic tale of mystery and faith. Set in 13th century England, Edric, a man crippled in body and soul, begs, steals, and sometimes plays a pipe to make a living. Against his better judgment, he saves the life of Azriel...a man who claims to be an angel. But is this stranger a divine being or the escaped "Mad Monk" from a nearby monastery? The peasant woman who finds herself attracted to the acerbic Edric isn't certain, nor is the morose knight in desperate search of secrets to the afterlife. Another scheming monk seems to have all the answers...or does he? But circumstances cause the beggar, the monk, and the knight to collide in the same quest, some of whom would see Azriel permanently locked away and Edric hanged for murder.

To slow to hold my interest

Started pretty slow and I had a hard time getting into it. It just didn't hold my attention or interest me.

The narrator was good and gave a great performance.

Very odd experience...

I started this book twice, but still couldn't get into the story. Nothing makes sense to me in this 'historical fantasy', so this review will be short.

I always love Joel Froomkin and he does a great job in this book as well with a British accent. So if I had to continue the book, it would be because of him.

What a beautiful listen!

Any additional comments?

At its core, this book is basically three separate stories. But what stories they are!! There is so much attention to detail in the writing that the people and their worlds come to life right before your eyes! There is a bit of a moral lesson with this listen and as a result, I found myself questioning who I am and how I'm being perceived. What a journey!!!

And the narration!!!! In the hands of anyone else, this listen may not have achieved the correct emotional and stimulating chord. But with Fromkin and his ability to produce believable accents and complete characterizations, you can't help but feel the angst and pathos. The characters have so much depth that it's hard to believe they are not being voiced by more than one narrator.

This is such a beautiful listen and should not be missed!!

The narrator was exceptional! His dialect was flawless and he kept me listening even when the story was kind of slow.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I was actually expecting more. Was he an angel? Was he crazy?

Which character – as performed by Joel Froomkin – was your favorite?

Edrick was awesome. He was so crude yet so tender when he needed to be.

Historical Fantasy with a Message

Would you consider the audio edition of Though Heaven Fall to be better than the print version?

I haven't read "Though Heaven Fall". This is a exceptional story, and I most definitely will read the Kindle edition.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Edric, the essential main character. The book does such a fine job of depicting his struggles and frustrations, which lead to the evolution of the story.

What about Joel Froomkin’s performance did you like?

It's amazing! Essential to why this Audible version is so powerful! His accent ,while easily understood, seems to be spot on for the time frame. Distinct between characters, dramatic without hysterically overreaching.

Who was the most memorable character of Though Heaven Fall and why?

Edric as explained above. Azriel too, they need each other. Without giving too much away.

Any additional comments?

The characters, plot, and relevancy of the story are first rate.
