Publisher's summary

Discover the three secrets to happiness - and much more - in the later years of life.

Never before in human history have so many people lived for decades beyond their working years. Ten thousand Americans turn 65 each day, and their average life expectancy is another 20 years - and many will live longer. But will they just live or have a meaningful life?

The truth is that many - if not most - people approaching the latter years do not have a plan, much less a strategy to thrive instead of just survive. Packed with information based on research as well as common-sense wisdom, here are some examples of what listeners will discover:

  • How retiring at the wrong time increases the likelihood of dying 89 percent.
  • What can delay Alzheimer's onset an average of nine years.
  • How everything that makes you happy comes in just three forms.
  • Which partner is most likely to initiate divorce after decades of marriage and why.

Critic reviews

“Whether you are thirty, fifty, or eighty years old, it’s not too late to take Eric Thurman’s advice for a happy, healthy, and secure retirement. With the secrets he offers in Thrive in Retirement, you can enjoy what many of us feel are the best years of our lives! Thank you, Eric, for writing such a great road map!” (Marilyn and Jim Lovell, astronaut and commander of Apollo 8 and Apollo 13)

“Leaving my long executive career was a big change. Thrive in Retirement is a candid and well-researched wealth of information and encouragement on how to not only navigate but thrive in the great third season of my life.” (Jerry Forte, CEO, Colorado Springs Utilities (retired))

“As retirement nears, we encourage older adults to plan for their future financial or health care needs, but what Eric Thurman insightfully notes is that we often overlook the need to plan for what will make us happy. I encourage older adults to use this book as their guide to happiness.” (Marla Fronczak, MSNM, executive director, Northeastern Illinois Agency on Aging)

The 3 Ps and 5 Parts of Life are Gold!

The author has a heavy reliance on storytelling to a fault. I found myself craving more conciseness and getting to the point. Nevertheless, I found good value in this book.

Retirement is not just a Destination!

Retirement is not just a Destination!
It's 30 percent of your life, and i never thought of it like that. Brought up many aspects of retirement that I never considered.
Took me some time to get out of my own head and listen with an open heart, glad I did. Once I retired I was left with identity crisis, depression and asking myself now what? This book is very thought provoking and helpful for anyone retired or getting ready to retire. Embrace the 30 percent! It's a gift!

Thought starter

Just beginning to take retirement seriously and this is a good first book to get me thinking about the subjects that matter. It was also helpful to see the author's opinions along with others on different topics while I develope my own opinion.

full of practical and thoughtful advice for life

the book is a good read for looking at your life overall, especially in the last third of your life.
Imagining what i would do if I had only one year to live helped me to rethink priorities and ensuring that i have everything in order for my family when i pass.

Good information would recommend

Overall I enjoyed the book - it did go into religious aspects longer than needed. And Unfortunately the resources webpage is no longer functioning so audio book listeners cant download the resource documents anymore ☹️.

Not Really Helpful

I found this book to be totally uninteresting and not consistent with the title of how to thrive in retirement. Very disappointed and would not recommend.

No New Wisdom

If you are young or unprepared for life never mind retirement then this book will be worthwhile but otherwise just repeating common sense & quotations to give it a feel of wisdom
