About this listen
“I’ve got seven days to come clean to my new dad. Seven days to tell the truth....”
For 16-year-old Tiffany Sly, life hasn’t been safe or normal for a while. Losing her mom to cancer has her a little bit traumatized and now she has to leave her hometown of Chicago to live with the biological dad she’s never known.
Anthony Stone is a rich man with four other daughters - and rules for every second of the day. Tiffany tries to make the best of things, but she doesn’t fit into her new luxurious, but super-strict, home - or get along with her standoffish sister London. The only thing that makes her new life even remotely bearable is the strange boy across the street. Marcus McKinney has had his own experiences with death, and the unexpected friendship that blossoms between them is the only thing that makes her feel grounded.
But Tiffany has a secret. Another man claims he’s Tiffany’s real dad - and she only has seven days before he shows up to demand a paternity test and the truth comes out. With her life about to fall apart all over again, Tiffany finds herself discovering unexpected truths about her father, her mother, and herself, and realizing that maybe family is in the bonds you make - and that life means sometimes taking risks.

Story
American Book Award-winning author Tananarive Due's second collection of stories ranges from horror to science fiction to suspense. From the mysterious, magical town of Gracetown to the aftermath of a pandemic to the reaches of the far future, Due's stories all share a sense of dread and fear balanced with heart and hope. In some of these stories, the monster is racism itself; others address the monster within, or other universal struggles set against the supernatural or surreal. All of them are written with Due's trademark attention to detail and deep characterization.

Story
People are drawn to libraries for all kinds of reasons. Most come for the books themselves, of course; some come to borrow companionship. For head librarian Kit, the public library in Riverton, New Hampshire, offers what she craves most: peace. Here, no one expects Kit to talk about the calamitous events that catapulted her out of what she thought was a settled, suburban life. She can simply submerge herself in her beloved books and try to forget her problems. But that changes when 15-year-old, home-schooled Sunny gets arrested for shoplifting a dictionary.

Awesome listen!!
I usually shy away from author-narrated books. They tend to not be good. This listen was very happily and surprisingly, not the case. It was excellently well narrated!! Kudos to the author for penning the story and bringing Tiffany Sly to life. Loved it!!
The story was pretty straight-forward. Tiffany's mom dies and she's sent to live with her father who she has never met. Good times, amirite? Tiffany's struggles are atypical and that's what brings the special in this story.
The only issue I have is with a couple of story lines, all of them involving Aric with an "a", that seemingly were brought up but never went anywhere. (I found myself waiting to see what happened but nothing did.) Still, that's just me being picky because on all other levels, this story soars. Loved it!!!

Yes and no
The author combines weaves her own experiences into this story. There's an openess and vulnerability I really appreciated. I also valued the insight into the struggles of young black women... especially those with darker skin. As an educator, I felt I was given a peek into a complex world and perspectives I've never seen. The story is raw and I found myself crying at times. But I didn't appreciate the push of New Age religion. This wasn't a mention in passing, but a push of the ideologies that morality is subjective (please explain how pedophilia and rape isn't good or bad... I'll wait) and each person is god. I'm not interested in being converted any more than Tiffany wanted to be converted to a Jehovah's Witness so it felt pretty hypocritical that the author would be shoving her religious beliefs to her audience. Parents should also be aware of adult content. lots of language and sexual content. As an adult, it didn't bother me, but I would not allow my teenager to read this. Without the push of her religion I would have given this book 5 stars, but it was such a turn off, I give it 3.
