About this listen

EARTH'S PAST MAY HOLD THE KEY TO ITS FUTURE

Prepare for a pulse-pounding adventure that transcends time itself in the riveting Time Trials. Meet Marty Cohen, a brilliant linguist turned woodworking shop owner who thought he had left behind the politics and rivalries of academia for good.

But when his woodworking business takes a hit, an offer he can't refuse pulls him back into the world of Egyptology. Marty is summoned to an off-the-grid archaeological dig, where ancient texts may hold the key to Earth's past and future. With the promise of riches, Marty embarks on a journey that defies belief.

As the texts unlock the secrets of protohistoric North Africa, a land plagued by horrors and in desperate need of heroes, Marty and his team are thrust into a battle against otherworldly overlords who resemble the gods of Ancient Egypt. Behind this perilous war lies a greater challenge: they are chosen to be champions of all Earth and must undertake a harrowing gauntlet to save humanity from extinction.

Failure is not an option.

This is a new author & narrator for me. I found this book on the 2 for 1 sale in the US. Great character development and storyline. The narrator did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life & the battle scenes. It really makes you fall in love with the characters. I'm bummed it's over. I think there's another book coming 🎉

Definitely Credit Worthy!

I normally don't care for LitRpg but this does just subtly enough that the elements add to the story not distract from it. The characters are great the story is amazing and the narrator is top notch

An unexpected pleasure

It’s got a bit of something for everyone…. Adventure, SF, alternate history, and some cleverly and subtly done lit rpg…. You’d think shoehorning all that in would make it clunky, but the authors pull it off w/ panache and imagination…. Story moves great side by the evocative setting, and supremely enjoyable characters…. Narration might be a bit flat for some, but speeding up the narration smoothes it out… Reminiscent of Tim Powers

Kinda felt like a multilevel video game and therefore meh. I won’t be getting the next.

Interesting premise

Excellent !! Not a clear about who actually control time travel and where the large cat like (2 legged) creatures originated.

Interaction of the team

Incredibly fun romp through ancient Africa. Rothman and Butler understand fun as surely as they understand ancient languages. The tropes of a GameLit Isekai are there, but dressed up in gloriously grounded characters and world building. More than that, they capture wonderfully the mysticism and sense of wonder that comes with deep dives into the ancient world. I can't wait for the sequel.

My only nitpicks are that the narrator's accents were sometimes hard to understand. And I'd appreciate a slight pause between shifts in POV. The immediacy with which they occurred made it really hard to follow sometimes.

Archaeological adventure that makes my inner 12-year old jump for joy.

This was a great portal book and at the level of adults. Traveling back in time to save humanity is a high pressure trip
