Beatrix Potter
About this listen
Beatrix Potter's amazing universe of animals dressed in human clothing has taught and entertained children for over a century. This volume brings together 21 of Potter's tales and verses in one audiobook. Hear Peter Rabbit outwit old Mr. McGregor, and Squirrel Nutkin come within a tail's length of being an owl's dinner. Listen as a family of mice save the kind tailor of Gloucester, and as Peter and Benjamin Bunny battle a barn cat. Learn how one fierce rabbit is set on the road to honesty. Although each story stands on its own, several are linked together by events and characters.

Story
Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) wrote Old Peter's Russian Tales while he was in Russia during the First World War, prior to becoming a war correspondent for The Manchester Guardian. There are 22 stories in all and are told by Old Peter at the behest of his grandchildren, Ivan and Maroosia, in a cozy log cabin in the middle of the forest. These are delightful re-tellings in Ransome's own words of Russian folk tales, and include stories such as "The Little Snow Girl", "Baba Yaga", "Frost", and "Salt".

Gypsies, faith-healers, moonshiners, and snake handlers weave through Drema's childhood in 1940s Appalachia after her father is killed in the coal mines, her mother goes off to work as a Rosie the Riveter, and she is left in the care of devout Pentecostal grandparents. What follows is a spitfire of a memoir that feels like a novel with intrigue, sweeping emotion, and indisputable charm. Drema's coming of age is colored by tent revivals with Grandpa, poetry-writing hobos, and traveling carnivals, and through it all, she serves witness to a multi-generational family.

Imaginings abound
Listening to these short stories carried me off to the World Of Beatrix Potter and her delightful tales of little animals. I do recall Ms. Potter almost always had a dangerously fearful climax for the little hero/heroine, until they barely escaped by the skin of their teeth. So for that, I'm not as much a fan, but such is life, and of that the authoress has composed it to be. And how grim it would've been if farmer MacGregor had eaten Peter, Flopsy, Mopsy & Cottontail in a rabbit pie?!

One of our favorites!
This is definitely a classic for good reason, but the amazing narration really makes it extra magical. I LOVE hearing all the voices, especially when the little animals sound so indignant about things. Such an incredible performance; I would absolutely recommend this to anyone. Quick tip: for our littler ones, I play it at 75% speed since they’re not used to the accent. That doesn’t sound good for some books, but this book still sounds good at the slower speed.
