About this listen

From the number one New York Times best-selling author of A Discovery of Witches - now a hit TV series on AMC and BBC America and streaming on Sundance Now and Shudder - the fourth novel in the All Souls series. What does it truly take to become a vampire?

On the battlefields of the American Revolution, Matthew de Clermont meets Marcus MacNeil, a young surgeon from Massachusetts, during a moment of political awakening when it seems that the world is on the brink of a brighter future. When Matthew offers him a chance at immortality and a new life free from the restraints of his puritanical upbringing, Marcus seizes the opportunity to become a vampire. But his transformation is not an easy one, and the ancient traditions and responsibilities of the de Clermont family clash with Marcus's deeply held beliefs in liberty, equality, and brotherhood.

Fast-forward to contemporary Paris, where Phoebe Taylor - the young employee at Sotheby's whom Marcus has fallen for - is about to embark on her own journey to immortality. Though the modernized version of the process at first seems uncomplicated, the couple discovers that the challenges facing a human who wishes to be a vampire are no less formidable than they were in the 18th century. The shadows that Marcus believed he'd escaped centuries ago may return to haunt them both - forever.

A passionate love story and a fascinating exploration of the power of tradition and the possibilities not just for change but for revolution. Time's Convert, the fourth book in the All Souls series, channels the supernatural world-building and slow-burning romance that made the previous books instant best sellers to illuminate a new and vital moment in history, and a love affair that will bridge centuries.

“In Time’s Convert, Deborah Harkness, the author of A Discovery Of Witches, spins a tale of life-ever-after, romance, and family drama, and it is gloriously entertaining.” (Bustle)

“This vampire book is set during the American Revolution, when a young man named Marcus MacNeil is offered a chance to escape his puritan upbringing (boring!) and become immortal (fun!). From the bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches.” (New York Post)

Love this series of books.

I love the stories in this series. However, I can't get past the narrator in this story. They should never have changed the narrator mid series. I will have to buy the book to finish it. The original narrator is one of the best I've ever listened to.

Disappointing

I am a big fan of the All Souls books so I preordered this one and was so excited to see it in my library on the date of publication. I ended up being really disappointed by this book. No spoilers here, but I will comment that I kept expecting something, anything interesting or exciting to happen. This had the tone of a book that the author wrote because there was a lot of clamor for a new book in this universe and because the money was good. I don't feel as if Deborah Harkness had her heart in it. That said, I did gain a bit of insight into a favorite character from the trilogy.
The other thing I absolutely hated was that the narrator couldn't do accents at all and it was so distracting to hear them done so badly. I don't think I'd listen to anything else that she narrates if an accent other than Midwestern America is called for.

Um, huh?

They changed narrators which was a huge problem for me. Matthew didn’t sound sexy he sounded like a bumbling oaf, as did Marcus. Isabo didn’t even sound French, ugh!

There was also no plot. It was a stream of thought book. While I enjoyed visiting this world it wasn’t the same. No thrills, no suspense, just some of Marcus’s story. Really, what I thought would be the exciting times were glanced over...New Orleans, first days as a vampire, the Indians that helped Mathew reign in Marcus, all glossed over. Yet we spend the whole book jumping back to phoebe’s first 90 days.

Overall it was worth it to visit with old literary friends but it wasn’t a good addition to the series, or even really part of it.

I missed Jennifer

The narrator didn't do as good - the accents fell flat for each character:( but the story was okay. Overall dissappointing.

Love this series but narration was lacking

I love everything about this series and the author. Jennifer Ikeda was the original narrator and was fantastic! She brought it to life for me, to change to this new one ruined it and I had to read instead of listen.

Good story, terrible narration.

I’ve listen to the Discovery of Witches trilogy many, many times. And while all the stories were entertaining and fun, the narrator for Times Convert was terrible. Maybe if I hadn’t already heard the other books I’d be more forgiving. But the narrator for the first 3 books was SO MUCH BETTER! She really honed her craft. The voices were so different for each character and totally in keeping with that character. Maarleveld phones it in. She mispronounces names, she reads characters who are described as having a soprano bell ringing type quality to her voice in a deep alto tone. I’m so disappointed. I’ll buy the books but please don’t use her again. She does you a disservice. She almost ruins the whole story. There’s magic in your stories, and Jennifer really helped bring it out and made it shine. Saskia does her best to kill it.

Bad Narrator.

This narrator stinks!
She reads too fast and reads like she is in a hurry to get through the story.
love the first three books and have listened to them several times. This book has a different narrator. Her accents and voices are not the same and her pronunciation of names are off from the first three books.

Disappointing

The story was ok. Nothing really happens. The performance was awful. Why didn’t they have the same person that did the other books perform this one. I still love all the characters in the book. I hope she continues the series and maybe adds more characters. Maybe see if ransom finds his true love.

New Narrator

Had a hard time getting past the awful narrator, especially with Diana telling a good portion of the story. Hearing names pronounced wrong. Accents done wrong, badly, or not at all was really aggravating. At one point Fernando was British!!! I'm returning this book and good riddance. This narrator didn't do any research and just wasn't a good fit after how beautifully Jennifer Ikeda did with the first 3 books.

You might have been able to overlook the narration had Deb Harkness not kept all of the standard characters heavily woven through the "story", but she did.

Missing Jennifer

I was so looking forward to this new chapter in the Bishop-Claremont story. Deborah Harkness again delivers an enchanting story that grabs your attention and leaves you wanting more. Unfortunately, the narrator leaves a lot to be desired. I GREATLY missed Jennifer Ikeda! The change was very jarring, especially if you enjoyed the first 3 books with Ms Ikeda’s performance. The changes in each character’s voice made this difficult to listen to; some where so much rougher and grating when compared to the “original”. And the new narrator’s mispronunciations and even miss-reading of some of the text was just too much. If you are a fan of Ms Ikeda’s work, just buy the book and read it yourself. You will be much happier.
