About this listen

A witch is cursed to relive a doomed love affair through many lifetimes, as both troubled muse and frustrated artist, in this haunting debut novel.

Helen Lambert has lived several lives - a young piano virtuoso in 1890s Paris, an actress in 1930s Hollywood, a rock star in 1970s Los Angeles - only she doesn't know it. Until she meets a strange man who claims he's watched over her for centuries, bound to her from the beginning.

At first, Helen doesn't believe him. Her life is as normal as any other modern career woman's. Then she begins having vivid dreams about ill-fated love and lives cut short.

Caught in a curse, Helen will be forced to relive the same tragic events that ruined her previous lives. But with each rebirth, she's developed uncanny powers. And as the most powerful version of herself, Helen must find a way to break the curse before her time runs out.

A Witch in Time is a bewitching tale of passion, reincarnation, and magic perfect for fans of A Secret History of Witches and Outlander.

Critic reviews

"With lush historical details and a wicked sense of humor, A Witch in Time fully immerses the reader in the story of Helen and her fated demon, unpacked like nesting dolls across time and lives, fortune and chance. From Belle Epoque France to modern-day D.C., from worlds pastoral, decadent, flashy to commercial, Sayers weaves a spell of love, lust and magic to create a page-turner like no other. All the thrill of a Discovery of Witches, with all the mystery and epic romance of Richard Matheson's classic Somewhere in Time." (Steph Post, author of Miraculum)

"Sayers cleverly twists the loves-lost-through-time motif.... A smart, engrossing debut from a writer to watch." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Sayers traverses time periods effortlessly with lush, graceful descriptions.... This spiraling narrative will appeal to fans of historical fiction and complicated love stories." (Publishers Weekly)

Wasn’t sure I’d like this - I was wrong.

At first I was confused about what was happening but soon caught on. About half way through I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to stop until the very end. The book is well written and flows well once it makes sense. The voices were okay but a little distracting, especially the male voices. The premise of A person living multiple lives and eventually remembering each one vividly is a good one. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys interesting twists and connections. There is use of swear words.

Fantastic!

I rarely take the time to write a full review but this one blew me away. Not only was the story something different and totally intriguing, it also had fantastic narration. It was also in a genre that I normally do not listen to. I cannot wait to see what this author comes out with next. I can’t believe this was her first book. Well done!

The Witchy World meets Outlander in a great book

Helen believes she is meeting a blind date when her world is turned upside down by the information this "stranger" imparts. Apparently, Helen is a witch that has lived several lifetimes before. A witch forced to live a long time curse over and over. However, as Helen begins reliving her past lives, she magic begins to grow stronger.

Through Paris 1890s, Hollywood 1930s, New Mexico 1970s and now, Helen lives weave a beautiful tale of loves lost, curses that can control many lifetimes, and a tale of new love/magic. Sayers has delivered a great story that will leave you craving more. Beautifully written characters and storyline makes this a wonderful read.

Who’s the villain?

This book will keep you guessing. Just when you think you know, you really don’t. I thought this book might be a trite reworking of other time travel stories but it was so much better. The narrator added to the story in that you didn’t really focus on the narrator at all. (I just barely finished a different audiobook where the narrator was so bad it was all I could think about). The story just seemed to flow on its own. Loved the historical references as well in the various time periods.

Engaging story, a different take on reincarnation.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. As with most books these days, I feel they get a little rushed towards the end. The need to "wrap it up" becomes apparent. The flow of this story is that of an inner tube ride, on a lazy river, on a warm summer day. Your excited to get in the water, find a good position, and let the river current take you along it's winding path. The narrator did a great job with different accents and conveying the different characters. The story, as it unfolds, was engaging. Each chapter was a little book unto itself. Which was nice because it left me looking forward to the next chapter but not so desperate that I made myself late to work. The idea of being able to recall past lives, and how they affect the current one, makes this story engaging. The supernatural aspect of the story, in my opinion, is a minor character for the overall story. If you listen with children near by, be aware of some language and sex descriptions. The author could easily make this a trilogy, telling the story from two other main characters, which could make the overall story that much more dynamic. I look forward to hearing it again.

surprising love story

I thought this was a witchy story but surprisingly it was much more. a mixture of past, present , and a true love story intertwined.
I always wondered about past lives wouldn't it be nice if we could all remeber ours so that we could be more intuned with our true selves.
my first book by this author and it did not disappoint. narration was wonderfully done. and I found myself wanting to keep listening and sad when it came to an end wanting more to find out how her last life ended up. its worth the read for anyone who enjoys fictional mixed with history and magic.

Original and engaging

The story is so engaging that I didn’t want to stop listening. The narrators did a fantastic job, never distracting from the story and never overacting. I rarely leave reviews, but if you wonder if this one is too long or maybe there’s another story you want to listen to, don’t. This is the one.
