Publisher's summary

Debut voice Alison Ames delivers with a chilling, feminist thriller, perfect for fans of Wilder Girls and Sawkill Girls.

Moon Basin has been haunted for as long as anyone can remember. It started when an explosion in the mine killed 16 people. The disaster made it impossible to live in town, with underground fires spewing ash into the sky.

But life in New Basin is just as fraught. The ex-mining town relies on its haunted reputation to bring in tourists, but there’s more truth to the rumors than most are willing to admit, and the mine still has a hold on everyone who lives there.

Clem and Nina form a perfect loop - best friends forever, and perhaps something more. Their circle opens up for a strange girl named Lisey with a knack for training crows, and Piper, whose father is fascinated with the mine in a way that’s anything but ordinary.

The people of New Basin start experiencing strange phenomena - sleepwalking, night terrors, voices that only they can hear. And no matter how many vans of ghost hunters roll through, nobody can get to the bottom of what’s really going on. Which is why the girls decide to enter the mine themselves.

Whoa

Fabulous book with the absolute best narration I have ever heard. She had a different tone for almost every character.

Awesome Book, Mad Ending

I LOVED this book, it was written beautifully, the characters are amazing and unique, it was so creepy and gory, the ending made me unbelievably enraged! 10/10 would recommend! Especially if you’re driving alone across the country at 10pm, like I was :)

Really enjoyed this book

This was recommended to me by a friend. I thought it was well written and well narrated. The end gives you some things to think about as far as maybe a sequel or possibly question what you thought you knew while listening. Great story!

A horror story that will put you to sleep

This book isn't horrible, it just isn't very good. It is supposed to be a horror/fantasy, but there is little that is horrific or even suspenseful in it. There is a mystery, but it isn't solved and you will leave this book without a clue as to what is behind the strange happenings in this mining town. I think you will wonder why anyone would choose to live in such bleak surroundings since there seem to be few income opportunities and people keep disappearing. You may be equally mystified why a book featuring 4 teen girls who are not yet sexually active is listed as LGBTQ - I know I was. So, I don't actually like a lot of romance or any graphic sex in my novels. When I want to read erotica, I'll pick authors who actually know how to write it (and most don't). But I do sort of expect that sexual orientation will have something to do with a story when it is labelled as "LGBTQ". No Spoiler - one girl mentions she likes girls and one girl thinks she may be bisexual. Voila, LGBTQ. I don't especially care about the sexual orientation of characters in books because I definitely don't care about their sex lives. So why even mention this when it has nothing to do with the story?

The book actually starts pretty strong. We get the setup for the haunting/mystery/weirdness of the town and the abandoned mine and we get some nice scenes of the four girls meeting and forming a very tight friendship. Then, nothing. A bunch of jump-scare scenes, no answers, no change, no real resolution. And while the girls are running around willy-nilly, I got so bored with them I stopped caring. The end. I got this free through the Audible Plus library so no big loss.

Narration by Suzy Jackson was pretty good since she gave each character a unique voice. However, listening to hours of four teen girls chattering wasn't really pleasant.
