About this listen

The Conjuring meets Sadie in this queer ghost story, when 17-year-old podcaster Dare finds herself in a life-or-death struggle against an evil spirit.

Dare Chase doesn’t believe in ghosts. But as the host of Attachments, her brand-new paranormal investigation podcast, she knows to keep her doubts to herself if she wants to win over listeners.

Her first season’s subject is the Arrington Estate - a sprawling manor rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Atheleen Bell, who drowned in its lake almost 30 years ago. Dare’s more interested in investigating the suspicious circumstances of Atheleen’s death, which she thinks point to a decades-old murder, not something supernatural.

But Arrington is full of surprises. As Dare is drawn deeper into the mysteries of the estate, she’ll have to rethink the boundaries of what is possible. Because if something is lurking in the lake…it might not be willing to let her go.

Critic reviews

“Nancy Drew meets Ghost Hunters in this queer thriller. An utterly addictive ghost story.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Based on the real-life haunted house in the author’s family, this beautiful ghost story was impossible to put down. I felt like I had opened a doorway into an eerie, layered story that might not let me leave - and I loved it! One of Sarah Glenn Marsh’s most captivating novels yet!" (Shea Ernshaw, New York Times best-selling author of Winterwood)

“Sarah Glenn Marsh establishes a chillingly gothic atmosphere, where house and lake are as much characters as the living and the dead...[but] the three clever girls at the center of this unsettling narrative steal the show.” (Publisher's Weekly)

Listening to this masterpiece, I felt like I was exploring New Hope and the Arrington Estate right along with Sadie. This is the type of scare that doesn't make you imagine there are monsters under the bed, it convinces you that you are just lucky enough not to have seen them.

Another brilliant, haunting tale from SGM

the most engaging part of this book is the last 5 min of the podcast she gives as an update to what happens at the end. otherwise I had such a difficult time following this one. I'm a big visual person and I wasn't able to picture a single character and I couldn't get lost in this one. I feel bad giving a crummy review but I was really waiting for it to be over so I could start something new...

honestly a little boring

so, I almost passed this book up. I'm really glad I didn't because it was really good. it was a slow start, but if you keep with it, it gets better. had some good creepy scares.

This a prefect start to the spooky fall season. I was hooked because many reviews likened this to Sadie another great listen. While yes both share similarities this left me more same feeling when I first listened to Truly devious for the first time. So if you are fan of Truly devious or Sadie this will be an enjoyable listen and be prepared to be spooked.

Prefect start to the spooky fall reads

Such a great slow burn haunting story. I really felt like I got to know the characters. Hope Sarah Glenn Marsh does more of these someday.

Spooky and personal

Does the girl have diabetes?!? I can’t tell… SMH!! I don’t understand why there is so much focus on this girls diabetes. It completely defines her and it’s discussed on nearly every “page.” It’s all consuming and it was really sad that she could be talking about ANYTHING else and she would find a way to make it about her disease. I couldn’t tell if this was a story about the supernatural or an advertisement for an insulin pump. I couldn’t get through more than a few chapters and had to return it & get my credit back. There is more to life than my illness - too bad this girl hasn’t learned that yet. I only hope young readers understand they are more than the challenges that they face - no matter how great those challenges are.

Does the girl have diabetes?!? I can’t tell… smh
