About this listen

Winner of the National Book Award, Pete Dexter has been declared "one of America's most original and elegiac voices" by People magazine. Train is a gripping piece of crime noir destined to become an American classic.

Lionel Walk, better known as Train, is a young black caddy at an elite Los Angeles golf course. There, he navigates between careless hostility of patrons and the volatile brutality of the other caddies. One day, he finds an unexpected protector: police sergeant Miller Packer, who Train dubs "the Mile-Away Man" for his distant gaze. Packer is investigating a botched and bloody boat hijacking that left a lone survivor: achingly beautiful Norah Still. When the lives of these three people intersect, both violence and tenderness swiftly rise to the surface.

Train exhibits the sureness of style and keen, compassionate eye that made Dexter's previous novels, including The Paperboy, best sellers. Dion Graham's powerful narration draws listeners deep into the currents of danger, dreams, and desire.

I love Pete Dexter. I have read all his books. This is my first audiobook. I am still looking for another audiobook that can even come close to this one.

I was also very disappointed in the ending. Upon reflection I realize what the author was conveying, however I felt the abruptness of the ending left to many parts of the story incomplete. I thoroughly enjoyed the book otherwise, just thought the ending didn't fit the rest of the book.

Regarding the reviewer's comment that the last chapter had been left. This book is so intelligently written that the author went as far as he could without repeating the sad events that would keep happening to these characters. The ending left the reader feeling like these characters were just born "under a dark cloud." It's a great read. Life is not always a happy ending. It's real! I want more Pete Dexter books. Heard The Paperboy is another excellent read.

Chris from Rockledge Fl

One of the best books I've listened to. I even went out and purchased the hardback for my home library. This is a very unique story of human drama, relationships and insight into a young black boy's poverty stricken life in the 1940's. Narration is excellent.

TERRIBLE ENDING

THE STORY SEEMED TO BE GOING SOMEWHERE AND GOT ME INVOLVED BUT IT THEN BEGAN TO FALL APART AND i COULDN'T BELIEVE THE ENDING, IT JUST STOPPED, AS THOUGH A LAST CHAPTER WAS MISSING. I WOULDN'T WASTE A CREDIT ON THIS BOOK BUT ORDERED IT BECAUSE OF THE OTHER 2 REVIEWS. I WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD REVIEW THE BOOKS SO THERE IS A BETTER SAMPLE TO AVERAGE. GET JOHN SANDFORDS BOOK AND USE YOUR CREDIT MORE WISELY.

Unremittingly Bleak

Kept waiting for a lesson to be learned or some kind of progress to a better place for our protagonist, but it just got worse. No denouement, the story simply stopped. Boo.
