About this listen

Trial confirms Richard North Patterson’s place as “our most important author of popular fiction.”

In a propulsive narrative that culminates in a nationally televised murder case, Trial explores America’s most incendiary flashpoints of race.

A Black eighteen-year-old voting rights worker, Malcolm Hill, is stopped by a white sheriff’s deputy on a dark country road in rural Georgia. His single mother, Allie, America’s leading voting rights advocate, restlessly awaits his return before police inform her that Malcolm has been arrested for murder. In Washington, D.C., the rising young white congressman Chase Brevard of Massachusetts is watching the morning news with his girlfriend, only to find his life transformed in a single moment by the appearance of Malcolm’s photograph. Suddenly all three are enveloped in a media firestorm that threatens their lives—especially Malcolm’s.

Demands to be read and heard

This book is an educational experience for all who choose to read it. The audio version I thought was excellent with the narrator using different and effective voices. The plot was engaging as well as accurate in its depictions of the trial and events leading up to it. Like his other books I have read, I am a better person for having done so and it will influence me in the future. Thank you.

Another outstanding R N Patterson book

Trial is both compelling and extraordinarily timely. So much to think about as our country continues its “human struggle.” Narration by W DeMeritt is outstanding.

One of my favorite books I’ve ever read

The author’s writing style and the different points of view are perfect for furthering the plot. You can tell how much work he put into making sure he had full knowledge of the inner workings of everything he wrote about. The characters are all well-developed and explained. This is the perfect example of art imitating life, it reflects society in this country with impressive accuracy. I couldn’t stop listening

Master Storyteller Present Realistic & Riveting

This read like nonfiction in the hands of this master storyteller who fictionalizes a realistic battle for justice in the south with vivid, believable characters. Mixes historical and contemporary civil, criminal, voting, and basic human rights against bigotry and corruption. Wonderful narration.

Current conditions

Excellent portrayal of current conditions. Patterson has been one of my favorite authors and I’ve waited for a long time for a new book from him. Characters were well developed as was the plot. I didn’t want it to end.

Best work of fiction I've read this year

I listen to books during my almost daily walks.

The Trial grabbed and captivated me for more than 18 hours. Considering the polarizing times we live in, I'm extremely happy I was able to hold fast from reading the reviews until after I reached "The End."

Though this is a big book, it was well worth the time I invested.
