About this listen

Busy looking for her missing mother and dodging enemies that are after her magical hammer, Matti Puletasi doesn’t need any more problems. She definitely doesn’t need the person who hired an assassin to kill her mother to show up—and target her.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the handsome elven ally she’s falling in love with might be working for the other side....

Better and better with each book!

Some books start falling flat the deeper they go into a series but I’ve never found that the be the case with Buroker’s books! The mystery surrounding Maddie’s mom and her legacy continues - only - of course, there’s more trouble on the horizon. I love how the romance in the story is subtle and not the center of attention, the slow burn is enjoyable and at times hilarious and heart warming. With Maddie’s need to learn about what really happened to her mother and threats coming for her, the funny bits lighten the mood. Can’t wait for the next book!

Matti jumped out of the frying pan, into the fire.

Matti seemingly jumped out the frying pan and into the fire at the start of this book. When she discovers that her mother's sister is now after her. And her best friend, a goblin roommate Tinja has been poisoned. As Matti rushes to get the ingredients for a vampire concocted antidote. Sarrlevi isn't afraid to jump in to help protect her. And if it hadn't been for Sarrlevi’s intervention she wouldn't have aquired the last of the ingredients needed. But, I still find myself disheartened that Sarrlevi, the hottie elf assassin seemingly can't dig his way out of the dog house. With all the good deed he does, Matti even now suspects him of ulterior motives.

I love finding quotes that amuse me and posting on my reviews:

"My new mentor carried a similarly logoed canvas tool tote, and I envisioned him teaching me how to enchant hedge clippers so we could have an Edward Scissorhands moment."

“Relationships with deadly men with two swords do seem like they would be complicated”

Amazing as always

The best book of the series, so far. Can’t wait to read book 4. I’m so mad at the elf.

Hold On

Hold on to your seat because you are in for an amazingly fun and awesome ride. Before I continue I mist admit that I am a fan of Lindsay Buroker and Vivienne Leheny for quite some time. This book is an excellent example of why I am such a fan. The pace of the book was right on the mark, it kept moving in such a way to keep you engaged, wanting to know what was happening next but it did not seem rushed at any point. It has the perfect touch of humor to help balance the action that is throughout the book. Ms Leheny narration was amazing, the emotion that she was able to bring across the sound waves is some of the best I have heard in this genre from any narrator. Thank you both for what you do..

Another favorite

I generally like all of Ms, Buroker’s series, but the Death before Dragons series, including this sequel, has become the top of the list of favorites. I thought Val would be my favorite heroine, but now it has to be Mattie. Ms, Buroker’s heroines are usually strong personable warrior type women but I like it that Mattie has both strengths and vulnerabilities. In old fashion, romance adventure type stories, the hero usually comes to save the day; that’s not the case with these heroines. Ms. Buroker’s heroines usually rescue themselves. With Mattie, I can relate with her self doubts and self questions even though she trudges forward to get done what she needs to get done. I’ve always been a big fan of Ms. Buroker and Ms. Leheny combination.
