About this listen

When Inspector Shanti de Silva moves with his English wife, Jane, to his new post in the sleepy hill town of Nuala, he anticipates a more restful life than police work in the big city entails. However an arrogant plantation owner with a lonely wife, a crusading lawyer, and a death in suspicious circumstances present him with a riddle that he will need all his experience to solve.

Set on the exotic island of Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka) in the 1930s, Trouble in Nuala is an entertaining and absorbing mystery spiced with humor and a colorful cast of characters.

I can speak from experience; the people and places identified in this book are totally authentic and so compelling. Having lived in Ceylon it gives me a unique perspective to this interesting and well written book. I can't wait to start on the next in the series!

Authentic!

If you love "Golden Age" mysteries - how they're written, the style of detective - you'll enjoy this. The characters, the story, and progress of the plot all keep you interested.

The author does a great job in portraying the time and place, a small city in 1930s Ceylon. I wasn't there, but feel like I know it now.

very good mystery

I really enjoyed the atmosphere, culture, narration and intriguing mystery. Inspector de Silva is a happily married man. Nice to have a main character without all kinds of personal problems as is so common in the troubled main characters of today’s televised murder mysteries. The book has lots of atmosphere though the character development is a bit shallow. But it works to make this a nice listen maybe for the beach or to while away the hours traveling somewhere.
I recommend this very pleasant book!

Good to have an untroubled Inspector!

Excellent narration, beautiful descriptions of the country, food and culture. The ending felt a little rushed but did not detract overall from an otherwise great book.

Beautifully written

This was a delight. Very pleasant main characters to spend time with and a unique and lovely locale unfamiliar to many readers. Just enough history to add depth. I am delighted that there seems to be several more novels in the Nuala series and I hope the author is still writing them.

Charming and interesting

It started out interesting. Chapter 3 and4 various accents became hard to understand. Englishmen speak normally don't shout in a hoarse voices. Had to stop listening.

story teller

A quiet mystery, reminded me of theLadies #1 Detective Agency mysteries, common sense, incite to human foibles help solve the case. Definitely in the cozy category. Good sense of place
