About this listen

A merchant’s daughter who yearns for adventure gets more than she bargained for when she falls for a broodingly handsome stranger in this saucy romantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hurricane Wars.

“A true delight of a book! Spicy and heartfelt—this one is a winner all around.”—Katee Robert, author of Neon Gods

As the daughter of an ambitious merchant, Guinevere’s path has been predetermined: marry into a noble house of the Dwendalian Empire, raise her family’s station, and live quietly as a lordling’s obedient wife. But Guinevere longs for a life unbounded by expectations, for freedom and passion and adventure.

Those distant dreams become a sudden reality when her caravan is beset by bandits, leaving her guards slain and Guinevere stranded alone on the dangerous Amber Road. Her only chance of survival is to travel alongside Oskar, the aloof half-orc who saved her during the attack.

Unlike Guinevere, Oskar’s path is not so set in stone. With his mother dead and his apprenticeship abandoned, all that’s left is a long, lonely walk to a land he’s never seen to find family he’s never met. The last thing he needs is a spoiled waif like Guinevere slowing him down—even if the spark between them sizzles with promise.

Despite his cold exterior, Oskar is brave and thoughtful and unlike anyone Guinevere has ever met. And while Guinevere may be sheltered, she brings out a softness in him that he has never dared to feel before. As the flames of their passion grow, they realize that soon they’ll need to choose between their expected destinations or their blossoming romance.

Written by New York Times bestselling author Thea Guanzon at the behest of Critical Role’s Jester Lavorre, Tusk Love brings the most romantic story on Exandrian bookshelves to life.

Critic reviews

“Guanzon’s mesmerizing prose delivers a magical, exhilarating experience featuring a hilarious yet heartwarming dynamic between Guinevere, the wayward lady with a fiery secret, and Oskar, the half-orc hunk with a soft side (who deserves to be climbed like a tree). Tusk Love will have you giggling and kicking your feet when it isn’t ripping your heart out.”—Xiran Jay Zhao, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Iron Widow

“A true delight of a book! Spicy and heartfelt and laugh-out-loud funny—this one is a winner all around!”—Katee Robert, New York Times bestselling author of Neon Gods

“Spicy, captivating, and enthralling from the first page to the last. It’s full of laugh out loud moments, banter, and spice so hot, you look over your shoulder to make sure no one else is looking. Cannot recommend enough!”—Elayna R. Gallea, bestselling author of Tethered

Critical Role does it again! Love this story and wish it was longer. I can totally see Jester reading it while out on an adventure. I’d can’t wait for the next one.

Came because of my love of Jester, but it was such a beautiful rich story. Felt similar to a regency romance but with a fantasy element. Truly SO good. Also, narration is top notch.

That’s the vibe this book gave me—and honestly, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did! Based on the cover alone, it probably wouldn’t have been something I picked up myself, but while road-tripping through Texas, my husband and I decided to listen to it together.

He’s a longtime listener of Critical Role’s D&D podcast, and—long story short—this book is a work of fiction set within the world of their ongoing campaign. It’s kind of like how The Tales of Beedle the Bard exists inside the Harry Potter universe, but also became a real book you can read. Same idea here—fiction born from fiction.

All of this considered, it seemed like it would be a bit nerdy, but it turned out to be exactly the kind of book I enjoy. Here’s why:

1. This book has all the elements of a great regency-style romance: a lady who is a part of high society finds herself in a desperate situation in which a “rough around the edges” albeit kind-hearted MMC is thrown into her path.
2. There’s a forced journey that throws the characters together.
3. Add in the one bed trope, slow burn tension, and fantastic dual narration—and you’ve got yourself a winner.

Whether or not you're a D&D fan (I’m not), this one is a surprisingly charming romantic fantasy adventure with very little world building needed!

I loved that the story took place in familiar places from the campaign, and the distinctive voices of the readers.

So I just finished listening to Tusk Love. I got it mostly because the community joke of it and of course because of Jester😆. As a CR fan I thought the book was interesting.

For the most part I viewed it as a standalone book that just happened to be set in the world of Exandria, and from that point of view the book was good. I can safely say that it was my first ever “erotic novel” and it was a… safe experience. But looking at it from the point of view of a book that actually exists in Exandria? It’s honestly not as smutty as Jester and others made it seem. I went in expecting the raunchiest, smuttiest, book since “Fifty Shades Of Grey” with some comedy thrown in. What I actually got was the story of a sheltered 20 year old girl from a new money family trying to make it to her own engagement, falling in love with her 23 year old protector, in a whirlwind affair of lust turned romance and self discovery, all while trying to survive dangers of traveling.

All in all, in was a good book. Even if it felt like I was listening to our mother’s “Fabio Lanzoni” novels at times. If you know, you know😉 My only complaint would be that I was hoping for Laura and Travis to be the narrators, especially Laura since she’s the whole reason this book even exists.

Surprisingly good.

If you’re not a fan of teddy hamilton this might be a struggle. I bought this without checking the narrators because I like the author and boy was I rocked when his chapter started. Besides that the female reader was wonderful and the story was fun, a good amount of spice. Would recommend!

“And then Oskar falls in love with her! And he carries her across a field! And they love each other so much! It’s the most beautiful story Beau!” I love how they worked in some of campaign two’s snippets. Like the ship, the bodice ripping and the field.
