About this listen

"A terrific debut, and so very timely. With smart writing and compassion, Klepper offers us a look into the hearts of two women: a Syrian immigrant hoping to find a home in the USA, and the volunteer lawyer whose work brings a second chance at life not only to her client, but to herself as well." (Julie Lawson Timmer, author of Mrs. Saint and the Defectives)

Jessica Donnelly's life is beginning to unravel. When the attorney turned stay-at-home mom tentatively volunteers to represent Amina Hamid, a woman seeking asylum, Jessica must learn an unfamiliar area of the law. Soon, rising opposition to Muslim immigration and unexpected prejudices put her relationships on shaky ground.

Amina fled Syria with little more than memories that now fight against the images splashed on the news. Seeking a secure future and freedom from guilt and grief, she must learn to trust others amidst the reality of fear and hate.

To find stability, Jessica and Amina will both need to harness their own strengths, which may lie in connections that transcend generations, cultures, and continents.

Eye opening Book!

This is a heartfelt and meaningful look at life today... The many things an average person in the suburbs doesn't realize are happening everyday.

Very moving and realistic! Powerful book! Must read!

To say this is a great book doesn’t even begin to cover it! Absolutely superb narration as well! These 2 make a wonderful team! Both of these women lead completely opposite lives and have completely different backgrounds. They know nothing about each other, but throughout the book they get to know each other on a very meaningful level. Despite initially having biases about one another, they both learned from each other. What they learned from one another completely changed them and made them better people. The author did a fantastic job making the characters very personable, and the narrator brought them to life. The way the author described them made it feel like they were people I had come to know, and the narrator was spot on with her ability to depict the characters differently. I felt such a wide range of emotions...sadness, happiness, fear, frustration, suspense, relief...this audiobook has it all! So much of it was new to me...some of the legalities, and especially information about Syria. Definitely a thriller, but it goes beyond just storytelling. The author wrote a beautiful and thrilling book with believable characters, and the narrator made it real! I received a free review copy, and my review is voluntary and honest. Don’t just read it...let Ms. Beacom tell you the story so you can feel like you’re right there with the characters and living through the experiences with them! I highly recommend it. The author and narrator have also partnered together for other audiobooks, but I haven’t listened to them yet. I’m definitely a big fan now and will be starting another audiobook by this duo next.

Very Realistic Book!

The characters were well-developed, and the plot is believable, with enough twists to keep the reader intrigued. I found this to be a very compelling book. Lisa Beacom tells you the story so you feel like you’re right there with the characters and living through the experiences with them! This book was a pleasure to listen to and I would like to thank the author, narrator, or publisher for providing me this audiobook at no cost in exchange for my unbiased review.

One of the best books

This is one of the best books I’ve read all year. It’s definitely one of those books that I want my daughters and friends to read. It reveals generational stories of strong women who live their lives quietly yet impacting many others. It deals with universal issues of partnerships, motherhood, loss, identity, immigration issues and the everyday fears that women deal with throughout their life. “Finding your place” whether it’s a stay at home Mom with children gaining their independence or a female asylum seeker from a war torn country. There is the issue of women feeling as if their life has been shrinking. The beauty of very different women expanding their worlds and relationships on various levels was inspiring. It was never preachy. This beautifully layered story hit ever note pitch perfect. I was fondly reminded of Jodi Picoult. If you enjoy reading a book where you felt your worldview was challenged and expanded (all the while every viewpoint was represented) this is your book!
The Narrator for this book was excellent and I look forward to more of her work.

**I received a free copy of this book in lieu of an honest review.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

We are all connected; masterfully shown here.

*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.*

We believe to be unique and too different to each other; impossible to understand out of our complexity.

This wonderful story shows us, step by step, how two women who felt as most do realised we always have more similarities than differences that, if we open our eyes, show us we're simply cells from the same huge body; connected not by one tiny coincidence, but by endless links.

Well rounded and realistic characters who makee you feel deeply and realise support and love are all we need to understand each other; real life situations that make this story an eye-opener nobody should miss.

I found the narrator to sound a little bit robotic, but she did an amazing job playing different characters.

A highly recommended 5 star read!

The nest is getting empty.

This story is about what all of us mothers go through after we start having children and then they start being on their own. Do we go back to our careers or do we keep mothering until they are completely grown?
This story is also about immigration, muslims, and what our country stands for. Doesn't it say give us your poor, give us your.....
but for people who are coming into this country the proper way.
This story has much too it. A lawyer who is a little rusty, a husband who isn't sure he likes what she is doing. and the immigrant who is afraid to trust and who has lost everything. The narrator Lisa Beacom does a terrific job with all the characters even the accented one.

Jessica and Amina harness their own strengths that seem connected. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
