About this listen

In the shadow of World War II, one young woman must make an unthinkable sacrifice for those she loves.

Norway, 1940. Nazis pour into Oslo, a shroud of dread looms over the city, and eighteen-year-old Ingrid Solberg fears the worst. Under German rule, harsh rationing and the exorbitant cost of medicine threaten the lives of many, including Ingrid’s mother. And when Ingrid meets a young SS officer, she’s forced to make a desperate choice.

Seventy years later, after the death of Ingrid in her adopted country of Canada, her son, Arnold, finds a disturbing letter in her belongings. Though mired in his own personal problems, Arnold puts his troubled life on hold and embarks on a journey to Oslo to understand his family’s history.

As Arnold confronts the past, he discovers dark secrets and the long-lasting repercussions of decisions his mother made long ago. But as disturbing as his discoveries are, he has come too far to shrink from the ugly truth now…

I am usually not a fan of dual time lines, but the main idea of this story was too intriguing to pass by even with the dual time lines. I was absolutely worth the listen and I actually think the dual time lines allows for a more satisfying conclusion and understanding to the story.

intriguing listen, done very well

This was a good enough, entertaining story albeit one told in many ways before. I usually love Ms. Campbell’s narration, in fact this is the first time I’ve found room for improvement. Her attempt at a Jamaican accent fell far from the mark. It sounded Irish most of the time. And, she got better at her Norwegian accent but fell short there as well. Her German accent was spot on. Overall, it was really just the Jamaïcain that made me cringe several times. She’s still a star narrator!

Good Story; Narration Off Her Mark

Enlightening story based on probability. Frightening what happens when evil men have the control. Amazing g how people can be led down such awful paths.

Great book!

Very, very good. A reminder of what decisions some have been forced to make, the repercussions and fear. War is horrible. Nothing new in all mans history. Hatred, jealousy, fear is so ruinous, but not new. Forgiveness is key! Thank-you.

Good

This historical novel views life during World War II from a different perspective than those I've read about in the past. The storyline kept me engaged, although the wordy writing style made it a little less enjoyable for me. I found Ingrid's story much more involving than the contemporary tale focused on her adult son. Overall, the book was memorable, and I learned something about life in Norway during the war. Overall rating: 3.5 stars rounded up

Engaging but dragged in parts

I love history, the good the bad and the ugly of it. This book is about the bad and the ugly of WW II. I knew about the women who, for the most part, were forced to have relations with Natzi SS Officers in order to create a “pure” nation however I haven’t come across a novel that discussed this horrible mission. This book is about love and loyalty and how people can change their thinking and make a horrible situation better. Enjoy

Amazing

I found 'Under The Darkening Skies' to be a really good book. The story is about a woman in Norway who gave birth to a lebensborn child during WWII. I have done a lot of reading about WWII as I am a history buff but didn't know this program even exist. I was really disturbed and saddened about the way the levensborn children where treated after the war. I am a history buff and found this very compelling. The narrators are fantastic and do a great job. I highly recommend it.

Very Good but Very Disturbing
