Publisher's summary

The M/S Atlantica, one of the most advanced cruise ships in the world, is lost.

Land has disappeared. Fuel, food, and hope begin to dwindle.

After months recuperating in hospital, US Marine Jack Cohen hoped a Caribbean cruise would help him recover from the horrific injuries he sustained fighting in the Middle East. Instead, when the ship is attacked, he is once again thrust into battle to protect Atlantica against the ruthless enemy hunting her, and the insidious threat already aboard. On these mysterious and uncharted seas, where even the compass shows the sun rising to the west, Atlantica's salvation may lie with a Navy warship which is as lost as they are. Together, they must pool their resources and use every means available to defend themselves while discovering what has happened to them.

And the rest of the world.

Unfathomed is a military science fiction thriller which will appeal to anyone who enjoyed Lost, BSG or The Last Ship.

From the international best-selling author of Endeavour and Erebus.

Hmm. So so

Reminds me of the movie Final Countdown. Anyway, mildly entertaining. The narrator did not have a very imaginative and wide range of voices for the characters. As a result, I found it was more than average difficulty remembering who the was and with what group. Character development was lacking which added to that difficulty. Anyway, was torn whether I was willing to listen to next book in series. Finally decided I would give the series another chance hoping it will have its sea legs.

One of my favorite Thrillers this year

This book was exciting from start to finish. It reminds me of the Lost series if the writers of that series knew where they were going. It also reminds me of Clive Cussler, but I've only read a few of his so take that with a grain of salt. I listen to it as an audiobook and Michael Kramer is of course awesome.

Not Your Normal Run Of The Mill High Seas Adventure

Man, this is teasingly tight and adventurous piece of speculative sf... It does have a tiny bit of a lost feel, especially in the latter half, but so wonderfully different at the same time... The look at what ppl will do given extreme circumstances and happenings is done realistically and understandingly... Great pace and action w/ some nice martial aspects and attention to detail w/ jargon... Superior characters, hard to pick a fave, but pushed I'd have to say Jack, and in his case the author delivers one of the most honest portrayals of a person/vet w/ a disability I've read in a while... As good as the book is overall, it's simply superb in the last half, and the last third keeps throwing twists at you until literally the last page... Wow, the next book should be amazing... Narration is superb of course... If you can't like Michael Kramer you might as well give up audio books;). My only complaint is that I now have to wait an indeterminate time to slake my curiosity as to what comes next;).

Bring me home...

First, I have listened to the author's book "Endeavour" and thoroughly enjoyed it. That one was also narrated by the talented Michael Kramer. This book is wildly different and show's Kern's ability to write in a different genre altogether,...although there is a bit of sci-fi flare here, it is light. The premise--meeting of a cruise ship and a destroyer, relying on each other to survive--is awesome. Can you imagine the possibilities? The conflict between crews? The completely different missions and priorities? The stage is rife with genuine conflict opportunities and Kern does not disappoint.

Although I didn't really consider this taking a chance on a book, since I already liked one other of Kern's, it was still a new genre for him. But thoroughly enjoyed it. Was hard to pull the ear buds out.

Decent book but pretty terrible narration..

This was a decent story about ships being lost and the good vs evil theme going on as they battle each other for food and weapons, all the while trying to figure out how to get home to the America that seems to have disappeared. It kept my interest but we’ll have to see if I continue with the series. (See Narration.)

I did like our hero, Jack Cohen. He was recovering from losing his leg in battle and working on using his prosthetic better and decided to take a cruise and ended up being head of security on the cruise ship. He was a little insecure about it at first but when everything went to h*ll he got over those feelings.

There was no sex, just one kiss, and the F-bomb was used 24 times.

As to the narration: If it hadn’t been such an interesting storyline I would have stopped listening to this book. And since Michael Kramer narrates all three books I will probably not be moving on. His voice is somewhat deep and he does nothing to sound the least bit feminine when a woman talks. Laurie, Commander Heather Slater, Grace “Mack” McNamara and Carrie were the 4 women who were mostly in this story and every one of them sounded like a man. It was just terrible. His men were fine as were his emotions but his women’s voices totally sucked. Don’t let the higher reviews fool you.

Awesome storyline

A very nice story line. Something new for once I think and I thoroughly enjoyed the books and even more the audio version. The performance by Michael Kramer is superb.

No thrills here...

Story is so slow its like watching ice melt. The characters have ever so proper diction when they should be falling apart given what is supposed to be happening. Cutting my losses and giving up :(
