About this listen

Astrid Bell has known most of her roommates for years, but while they have a history together - romantic pairings, one-night stands, friendships - each of them also has a past. Astrid is on her way home one day when her neighbor knocks her off her bike. Seeing she is bruised but not broken, her roommates help her home.

The next day, they learn that same neighbor was beaten to death hours later. Each of them tells the police what they know and are dismissed - until Astrid stumbles over another body. Two bodies in less than a week is more than just bad luck. As the line between attraction and danger blurs, the roommates must guard against becoming the killer's next victim.

In tandem with an awesomely imagantive and tricky mystery of course; Nicci French always leaves me clamoring 4 more!!

Bittersweet homage to the tender memories of youth

I loved this narrator and got so enveloped into the story due to her voice! I would definitely listen to another story she narrates :)

Loved it!

What made the experience of listening to Until It's Over the most enjoyable?

Not the run of the meal story, similar to some Ruth Rendells and Cornelia Read books in that the true mystery is found through the characters' development. Makes you invest in the story by believing these characters could exist.

What did you like best about this story?

The relationship between Astrid and Owen. I enjoy youth believing they can fly but have forgotten they need to build their own rocket ships.

Which character – as performed by Anne Flosnik – was your favorite?

Astrid

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did.

Any additional comments?

A bit of a funky story and the conclusion gets a little mixed up by not adding enough hints to lead you to murderer but that also made it exciting for me as I love books that trip me up-at least until near the end. Not many do so when I find one, I truly enjoy being cognizant of all the characters motives.

My First Nicci French Novel recommended Goodreads

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

While this book was overall a decent listen, the wordiness and the tangents made me a bit bored at times and hoping to get to the point.
At times too, I did not like the narrator's voice because it was not convincing and sounded a bit too harsh.
However, I still enjoyed parts of the book, and was surprised by the ending.

A bit wordy

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

There are probably a million better books to listen to, but this was a nice and relaxing book.

Would you recommend Until It's Over to your friends? Why or why not?

Not to all of my friends, but I know one or two who would appreciate this book

What three words best describe Anne Flosnik’s performance?

Not that bad.

Did Until It's Over inspire you to do anything?

Not at all. It was a nice book for a lazy Sunday, just lying on the couch and listening.

Any additional comments?

Don't expect to be surprised by this book. It's more about the dynamic in a group of people when weird things happen. The first part (2/3) of the book is told from a girl's perspective. The second part (1/3) is told from the killer's perspective. At that point you already know who did it, so no surprises there.

Not bad

One loses sympathy for the vapid, feckless, thoughtless “victims” and wonders if there is any resolution or redemption. The killer is a fun character.

An allegory of modern Britain
