Born in Chicago, Dorothea Brande (1893-1948) was a widely respected journalist, fiction writer, and writing instructor. Brande is widely known for her enduring guide to the creative process, Becoming a Writer, originally published in 1934 and still popular today. In 1936, Brande published a masterwork of practical psychology, Wake Up and Live!

The book entered more than 34 printings and sold over 1,000,000 copies. For many years, Wake Up and Live!, with its simple and sound advice for personal excellence, rivaled the popularity of contemporaneous works such as Think and Grow Rich and How to Win Friends and Influence People. This classic of self-improvement is now available on audio with this new edition.

This was a good book on success with a great idea at the center but the narration was a bit flat. I would have prefered the voice of a woman since the author was female.

The information offered via this work has been beneficial for understanding a lot of childhood trauma being allowed to interfere in my best self. However, as a certified hypnotherapist, I can attest that although the story is meant well, the understanding and negative connotation of hypnosis proves extremely off target as hypnosis is not in the least “magical.” It’s a form of meditation that’s so deep another person must relay your own intentions via the theta waves—too deep to ignite in a waking state. Which brings us to Chapter 12, which states how it’s incorrect to judge something without first becoming completely aware of what you’re “dissing.” The example is a meeting where the final decision is cemented into place by the leader, who goes against the unanimous vote with prejudice to his own decision. This identical juncture is exactly what the author did by using partial and incomplete knowledge of hypnotherapy and stating it as truth.

Opinions should not be stated as facts, especially when unfounded. Research should have been given at an adequate level, other than hearsay, for the work to have been considered unbiased and factual. Mind you, this is not to say there are not imposters or even showman. This is true. However, the actual use is as formerly stated—a significantly deep meditation. Now, is it also of your opinion that conversing within your own mind is a ruse? I certainly hope not!

Furthermore, whoever took it upon themselves to remaster this amazing queen of art, did so utilizing the MAGIC of AI, as obviously noted with uncommonly used language of an overbearing diplomat, sprinkled with the redundant use of uncommonly known words. I shall like to discover Dorthea’s actual work, heretofor. 🙂

The message: Grow up (don't be a "poor crying childish ("infantile" as the author puts it) baby, ACT (take action) keeping in mind that failure is not an option.

At times, the author goes into subjects and matters that are beyond the ordinary average reader. This is when this reader could "stretch the envelope" of their knowledge, go the extra mile and learn (look things up) what the author is writing about.

This book is for those who are willing to think for themselves. Those who are used to having everything "pre-chewed" for them and who seem to feel "entitled" to having someone else think for them are advised to look elsewhere.

Don't be a baby and ACT AS IF you can not fail!

I enjoyed learning from this book. Dorothea Bran is definitely an inspiration to push you forward into a more productive life.
It would have been preferable to have a woman's instead of a male's so that it sounds like the author is instructing you directly.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the author to be very upbeat and "sassy" for a woman of her time. She was full of insight into various aspects of life. I like the challenge the book presented--even in it's title: Wake UP & Life. It really is all about choice. One you make everyday. What will you choose today?
