About this listen

Sergeant Major Scratch Keyes of the King’s Guard is having a bad night. First, her king denies her the promotion she rightfully earned, as well as the knighthood that goes along with it. And then, when Scratch is wallowing somewhere near the fetid rock bottom, she and her best friend, the gregarious Sergeant James Ursus, are arrested for orchestrating the abduction of Princess Frances and sentenced to death. On the whole, things could be better.

Luckily, help comes in the form of the mysterious Shae siblings who inform the doomed pair that the issue of the missing Princess is far more complicated than it appears. After a daring escape, the four embark on an ill-advised rescue mission through a forest filled with beasts, bandits, and mysterious fair folk, bringing nothing with them but a kitchen knife and the vague outline of a plan. Their destination is the Between, a sacred and shadowy fae-guarded place that promises to deliver Scratch and James to the princess — if they can survive.

But Scratch didn’t rise above her humble childhood in the Royal City slums by accepting things at face value. It’s clear that the enigmatic Shaes are hiding something, but what do they know? Who are they working with? And why, in the name of all the divine constellations in the scrambled sky, can’t Scratch stop staring at Brella?

Samara Breger’s Walk Between Worlds is a romantic queer fantasy adventure that will make you laugh even as it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Good story

Worth the read or listen. Well imagined, delightful characters and expertly narrated. Occasionally long winded, but does not detract from the story.

Brilliant narrator!

The best narration of fiction I’ve ever heard. Wondering if she composed the melody for the song Brackish as well as singing it. More than a dozen characters are voiced with unique individual tones and accents.
The story itself is good but would’ve been better with tighter editing. At times the pace was too slow and my mind wandered as I listened.

A lovely engaging story of finding oneself

This is such a great human story, a reminder of our youth no matter our age, a reminder that being strong is not always right that no matter what we know or who we know we all need a little help sometimes. The best part to me is that is a human story, not a stand out for incorporating queer characters. The world they live in doesn't see that lifestyle as a problem, just an everyday thing, So truly the growth in this story is straight up about learning to be a good human.

Brella + Scratch

Spicy: 0.5/5

Honestly, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novel. There was an enemy to lovers, action, tears, adventure, lies and truths, and many amazing stories.

The love story of Uncle and Aunt brought tears to my eyes. Much like Brella, I ache for a love like that.

I was a little bummed we didn’t get to see more into the revelation.

Utterly delightful!

Walk Between Worlds was a charming, thoughtful, and hilarious debut that I so, so hope gets a sequel. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a lighthearted (but still full of heart) queer fantasy tale.

It's okay

This is fine but I couldn't really latch on to lore or the romance. Neither aspect of the story feels completely developed.
